Horace Mann - Spring/Summer 2011 - (Page 5)

Director of Development letter from the director of development s people around the world picked up a newspaper, switched on the news on TV or went to an Internet site to follow the historic events of the past few months, many of us in the Horace Mann School community saw the name of an expert quoted, or the byline on a news-analysis essay we recognized from our days at Horace Mann. From Dr. Robert Geller ’68, a seismologist and professor at Tokyo University commenting on Japan’s earthquake preparedness, to Foreign Affairs editor Dr. Gideon Rose ’81 speaking on the conflict in Libya on CNN, or New York Times reporter David Leonhardt ’90 winning the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for his commentary “on America’s complicated economic questions” we Horace Manners were part of a community who connected with world events through the knowledge of others of us who share an education. No wonder that when Leonhardt publicly attributed the inspiration for his reporting to his days as editor of the Horace Mann School Record, few alumni could resist a private moment of pride. Those of us in Horace Mann’s alumni body who have the opportunity to connect with the school today have reason to be proud every day— not only in the accomplishments of our fellow alums, but in the excitement about education among students and teachers that characterizes the legacy of this school. Whether we are alumni parents, or grandparents of current students, or among the alumni who teach or work in every Division of Horace Mann, whether we are members of the Alumni Council, or alums who volunteer on behalf of this school, we see the passion for learning, the commitment to community, and the dedication to HM’s core values as strong as ever before. For those of us who are part of Horace Mann today it is a privilege to be thus connected—a privilege we wish to share with all of you who ever studied, played sports, performed, created or established lifelong friendships in the classrooms, on the fields, studios and stages of this school. A It is my privilege, as an alumna and as Director of the Alumni House and Development Office, to invite you to connect with Horace Mann through our events and volunteer opportunities. During this past school year our office has brought together alumni from across the decades in a series of new activities, including visits to campuses where recent HM graduates attend college; an evening honoring HM armed forces veterans; a Broadway theater outing; and a firstever “Golden Alumni” gathering. We also hosted regional reunions in LA and San Francisco, and a cocktail party for young alumni in Manhattan that drew over 200, and partnered with the Alumni Council for its annual Spring Benefit, a terrific event that brings friends together, while raising funds on behalf of HM students. We have also instituted new ways to connect with our alumni around the world. At www. horacemann.org  and www.horacemann.org/ alumni  you can read about life at our school on a daily basis, about the accomplishments of our students, and news of alumni. Our monthly “Across the Divisions” electronic newsletter brings you news from every Division of the school, and HM’s alumni Facebook page announces alumni events. We are also planning a lecture series by current HM faculty that you’ll be able to access over the Internet in real time, or at your leisure, wherever you are in the world. We hope you’ll connect with Horace Mann this year, as we prepare to commemorate our quasquicentennial, and celebrate 125 years of learning and living at Horace Mann. It’s a time to celebrate the essential part you played in these years. We look forward to connecting, and celebrating together.
