Horace Mann - Spring 2012 - (Page 2)

Letters letters We are pleased to note that the Winter 2012 issue of Horace Mann Magazine drew a number of responses, particularly, additions to the list of 125 memories over 125 years of Horace Mann School’s history. We are happy to share some of those added reflections here. For alumni who asked where to find pictures from Homecoming and class reunions of 2011, we refer you to www.HoraceMann. org.   for Horace Mann School’s 100th anniversary in 1987. A comprehensive history of Horace Mann School through today is in the works, and will answer further questions upon its publication. This current magazine issue offers some details about Horace Mann School’s beginnings, its move to the Bronx, and the re-entry of girls to the school, but its focus is on connections made among members of the Horace Mann School community from across the decades to the HM community of today. Remembering Fellow Alumni loved the cover of the latest HM bulletin. Those four guys, who are four years ahead of me, may look 60 years older, but their basic looks are exactly the same as I remembered them. They were four gentlemen that I always looked up to and I was delighted to see their pictures and happy smiles on their faces. John Freund ’50 I 125 Memories and more February 13, 2012 OMG!! Last night Adele received six Grammys; today I was #124. I think it’s a tie as to which one of us is smiling more broadly. You have to understand the background. While I toiled in the vineyards of HM for nearly 30 years, the Lower Division was most always an afterthought—with the Upper Division attracting the most attention, and rightly so, as their achievements and accomplishments surpassed those within the realm of us and our youngsters. Further, my heyday in the Lower Division predated the Tobolsky years. If one’s career is described by a bell curve, my best years were in the late 80s, before the school became as polished as it is today. So I never saw my name or my picture in an Alumni Magazine, nor did I have any reason to expect I would. I assumed that one day my demise would be recorded (and I’ve secretly hoped that someone would recall that my first ten years were under the moniker of Mrs. Cannon—that my earliest students might recognize the name,) but that was the extent of my expectation of my fifteen minutes of fame. When I started reading the 125 reasons to support HM, I only hoped that a few would surface from the Lower Division, and that I would understand the arcane and insider references of at least a handful. I was not disappointed, chicks hatching, Dorr references, and Senior Absurdity Day all rang a familiar note. But then, Number 124, a reference that would only have meaning to past students. You can’t imagine how tickled this old girl was to be remembered in such a special way. Please see that those responsible for constructing the list receive my gratitude—for being remembered for my humor—which is much dearer to me than for their mastery of the multiplication tables. 124 is my new favorite number. Sincerely, Shirley Walker Searching for a Horace Mann School history was disappointed in your issue about the 125 years of the school. What was missing in the issue was a history of HM. In the 125 years there were several Horace Manns. In my case I went to Horace Mann for 13 years. 7 of those years were in the elementary school which was part of Teacher’s College. After the elementary school I went to the Riverdale school. In my time there was a Horace Mann School for Girls. There was a Horace Mann-Lincoln. I was hoping to know about the first HM in 1887. When did Teacher’s College take over Horace Mann? When did they sell Horace Mann? Were other Horace Mann’s that I don’t know about? When did the current HM become coeducational and become a school of 12 grades? From my point of view these are important questions that a celebration should answer. I only read how great the current HM was. Delos Smith Class of 1953 Editor’s note: We are sorry if the last issue of Horace Mann Magazine caused readers confusion. In that Winter 2012 issue we launched our “coverage”—and celebration—of Horace Mann School’s 125 years, promising more to come. For a more detailed history of the school we referred readers to an excellent article that HM parent and journalist Shadi Sheybani wrote for the school’s Parents Association Bulletin which she edits, and noted that this article can be found online at http://www.horacemann.org/page. cfm?p=1018y. A source of even more detailed background that can answer the questions alum Delos Smith ’53 raised in his letter is the book Horace Mann-Barnard: The First Hundred Years published I Meredith Wollins Palley ’85 added the following: • The Wall • Jon Sklaroffs famous Buzell Game last SECOND shot, at 2 Horace Mann Magazine Spring 2012 http://www.HoraceMann.org http://www.HoraceMann.org http://www.horacemann.org/page.cfm?p=1018y http://www.horacemann.org/page.cfm?p=1018y
