Summer on the Hill Students at HM Launch SOH Club;
SOH Office Connects with the Program's Alumni
A
mong the 74 registered student clubs with which Horace Mann
School's Upper Division students are currently involved, many were
started by students wishing to pursue various interests, or to support
and bring awareness to causes they champion. In fall 2016 two HM students launched a new club-the Summer on the Hill (SOH) Club-that
has a goal of supporting its members.
The SOH Club was founded by Kaileen Germain '18 and Alejandra
Leon '18, under the guidance of SOH Executive Director Markell Parker.
The HM Upper Division juniors were once students in the SOH program,
before entering HM-Germain in sixth grade and Leon in ninth. The club
they launched aims "to bring awareness of Summer on the Hill within
the HM community and to act as a support
group for current HM students who have
gone through SOH, and were admitted to
Horace Mann School after completing the
program," explained Germain.
Founded in 1994 with 21 students who
participated in supplemental classes on the
Horace Mann School campus, SOH today
serves 200 promising third-through-eighth
grade public school students from the
Bronx, Washington Heights, and Harlem.
One of the most sought-after academic enrichment programs in New York City, under
the direction of Dr. John McIvor for 22 years
until his retirement in 2016, the program
grew to provide students with instruction in
the arts and sports, along with academics.
While most SOH students go on to attend
NYC's top high schools, a small number
enter independent schools, including HM.
The program recently extended its reach
to students through grade 12 by offering
test prep classes, college trips, and college
guidance for students and their parents.
Parker, Germain and Leon wanted to
provide a way for former SOH students now
at HM to continue to benefit from this sup-
portive program. "We felt that students like ourselves would appreciate
assistance in making the transition to HM life, so we decided to start
the SOH Club," said Germain. On the sunny afternoon of September
22, 2016, at the UD's annual Clubs Fair, the brand new SOH Club quickly
gathered over 30 student signatures on its sign-up sheet. Since then,
the club has met regularly, drawing "a considerable number of SOH kids,
along with those who have had similar experiences, including students
who came to HM through Prep for Prep," said Germain, referring to this
leadership and academic enrichment program that prepares promising
NYC students of color to enter top independent schools. "We made it
clear to those who signed up for our club that Alejandra and I are willing
to talk freely to anyone who needs advice
or needs someone to talk to and relate to
about their experiences at Horace Mann."
Noting that the Middle Division is an important point of entry to HM for students from
SOH, Germain added, "As our club gains
more footing we hope to form connections
with the Middle Division."
SOH, itself, has expanded its outreach to its 1,600 alumni, including 65
HM graduates. For those SOH veterans
who are also HM alumni the SOH alumni
initiative, together with Horace Mann
School's Alumni and Development Office
alumni relations work, serve as important
addresses for connecting HM-SOH alums
from across the decades with Summer
on the Hill's impactful program, as well as
with HM's many alumni-related efforts. HM
alumni who wish to connect with Summer
on the Hill, and with HM and its alumni
activities, are invited to contact Mabel

School Programs, and Alumni Relations:
