he Class Notes section of Horace Mann Magazine provides news
about Horace Mann School alumni. Alums can stay in touch with

Alumni Mobile App, which connects the Horace Mann School community
globally. The App now serves as the HM Alumni Directory. It also enables

Annual Alumni Council Benefit-takes place on Monday evening, May 1,

The Class Notes that follow briefly provide interesting news about
HM alumni. Many of the entries include Internet links to information

1934
Marsha Hunt celebrated her 99 birthday on
th

October 17, 2016 with the Cinema Society of La
Jolla, Calif. at a showing of the documentary
about her life "Marsha Hunt's Sweet Adversity"
at the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art.

The actor traveled from L.A. to participate in the
festivities. The film, by Roger Memos, chronicles
the life of this alumna who traveled to Los Angeles
with an uncle in May 1935. At age 17, already a
model and aspiring actor who had appeared
on Broadway, Marsha Hunt was "discovered" in
Hollywood. She signed with Paramount and went
on to a flourishing career at MGM. She made
54 films in 17 years before a series of unfortunate events led to her being unfairly blacklisted. After the blacklist, she championed
humanitarian causes, forging a new career as
one of Hollywood's first celebrity activists. The
film was showcased at the First Annual Sherman
Oaks (Calif.) Film Festival on November 20, 2016.

1938
Dr. Melvin Hershkowitz called the HM Alumni

and Development Office to share the sad news
of the death of his close friend for 75 years
Robert (Bob) Kaufman. (Memorial p. 57) The
two were classmates at both HM and Columbia
University. Dr. Hershkowitz continues to stay
active and serve as class correspondent for
his Columbia class of 1942.

1941
Mark Stroock reports that he is still going

strong at 93. He married legendary jazz pianist
Barbara Carroll in 2013. Mark has two grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

1942
James (Jim) Ludwig wrote: "My wife, Patsy,

and I celebrated our 11th wedding anniversary
and my 91st birthday at a Menlo Circus Club
dinner with my three daughters and their
husbands, my five grandchildren, my step-son
and his wife and their two children. I was recently honored by the San Francisco Zoological
Society at a "Jungle Jim" evening for serving on
the San Francisco Zoological Society Board for
55-plus years, as a former Chair, and currently
Vice-Chair. At 91 years of age I work out seven
days a week to stay in shape. All best regards."

1943
Patricia Broun wrote "Still here at 90. I'm in

good shape." Richard Gottlieb stays in touch
with the HM Alumni and Development Office.
