Tingling '71 with 2015 Award for Distinguished Achievement H orace Mann School alumnus The Honorable Milton A. Tingling '71, a prominent judge in New York City and State, was honored on Tuesday, October 27, 2015 with the 2015 Horace Mann School Alumni Association Award for Distinguished Achievement. Nationally known for his decisions that banned a statewide policy of shackling youths during transfer from juvenile facilities to family court, and his decision that found former Mayor Bloomberg's so-called "soda ban" unconstitutional, Justice Tingling has distinguished himself over the past three-plus decades as an attorney and then a judge, who was elected to the New York City Civil Court in 1996, and to the New York State Supreme Court in 2000. Re-elected to a second 14-year term as Justice of the Supreme Court, in January 2015 Justice Tingling was appointed County Clerk of New York County, Commissioner of Jurors and Clerk of Supreme Court, Civil and Criminal Divisions. By accepting this appointment, Justice Tingling became the first Black County Clerk in the history of New York State. A leader in the NYC community, Justice Tingling was also a student leader in his days at Horace Mann School, HM Alumni Council (HMAC) President Wesley Mittman LePatner '99 told about 200 guests at a dinner in the awardee's honor at New York's Palace Hotel. Tingling was an athlete and a founder of the Union, LePatner said, explaining that "the 36 Horace Mann Magazine Summer 2016 Union is one of the most important and popular clubs at HM. It is open to all students and its goals are to discuss issues surrounding students of color globally and execute appropriate plans of action to address the issues that have been discussed. Judge Tingling served as the club's first President." Guests at the dinner, along with Justice Tingling's family members, friends, HMAC members, HM parents, administrators, and faculty members also included students who are leaders of today's Union organization. Judge Tingling especially enjoyed connecting with the students and their faculty advisors and hearing about the Union's activities at Horace Mann School today. Recounting Justice Tingling's experience at Horace Mann School and as an attorney, judge, and justice in the years since, LePatner told those gathered "The mission of Horace Mann School is to prepare students to 'lead great and giving lives.' In honoring Justice Tingling, we honor an alumnus who embodies this mission statement." LePatner noted that Justice Tingling was also the first Black Distinguished Alumnus awardee in the history of the honor. "The Horace Mann School Alumni Association Award for Distinguished Achievement is bestowed upon deserving alumni after a careful process." LePatner explained.
