Horace Mann - Summer 2016 - 43

Class Notes at HM left a major influence on my future academic and professional life. It culminated in Phi Beta Kappa at Columbia College and Alpha Omega Alpha at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. It led to a Clinical Professorship in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, from which I retired in 1987. Thanks again for the happy memories. Tragically, public school in New York City, Philadelphia (where I worked from 1952 to 1987), and in rural Troy County, PA remains deficient. My two sons attended Episcopal Academy and my daughter attended Friends Select School, all in Philadelphia. I wish I knew what our society can do to improve public schooling." Dr. Martin and Wilma Beller retired to Gaines, PA, "my wife's hometown, in 1987. Have three children, nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild." Prof. Sidney Axinn writes "My grandson (Dr. Aaron Johnson) and I published an article 'The Morality of Autonomous Robots' in the Journal of Military Ethics (2013.) Horace Mann Magazine adds: Dr. Axinn is Courtesy Professor in the Philosophy Department at the University of South Florida. He chaired the Philosophy Department at Temple University for 15 years, and is Professor Emeritus there. He has taught or lectured in Japan, South Korea, Hungary, England, and Belgium, as well as West Point and the South Korea Military Academy, and is the author of A Moral Military-Revised Edition, Sacrifice and Value: A Kantian Interpretation, The Logic of Hope: Extensions of Kant's View of Religion, and over 40 articles in philosophy journals. 1942 Don Hillman celebrated his 91 birthday on April st 3, 2016. The television pioneer, who was hired as a stage manager at NBC and was quickly elevated to the position of director, produced the first live telecast of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade for NBC. Hillman went on to become the first executive producer of National Educational Television (NET), which became the Public Broadcasting System (PBS, Inc.) in 1970. Hillman remains active swimming and attending Broadway plays with his wife Enid. 1943 David Schaefer (Emeritus Associate Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at George Mason University, and an expert on Lewis Carroll) wrote: "As part of Alice 150 (www.alice150.com) the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the publication of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, in October (2015) I exhibited (and talked about) Lewis Carroll-related motion pictures from my Lewis Carroll film collection at Lincoln Center, and at the New York Institute of Technology. I am conducting interesting experiments with video-to-audio conversion software." Asked by a friend how he wanted to celebrate his 90th birthday Richard Gottlieb (above) answered, "With a visit to Horace Mann." The visit was arranged for April 29, 2015 when the alumnus flew to New York and spent a day on the Horace Mann School campus, meeting students, and having lunch in the office of HM Head of School Dr. Tom Kelly, along with HM Director of Development Melissa Parento '90 and Director of Alumni Relations Kristin Lax. Richard also visited an American History class where he shared with students some of his experiences as a World War II veteran who enlisted in the US Army at age 17, just after graduating from HM. He became a B-24 gunner and gunner-instructor to high-ranking officers, received a Distinguished Unit Citation, participated in an Honor Flight to Washington D.C. in 2014, and was recognized with a Congressional citation. Gottlieb was thrilled with his HM visit. He celebrated again on Sept. 5, 2015, his actual birthdate, with friends in Alamosa, CO. Richard continues to pursue his passion for photography. Below is a photo he took at Colorado's Great Sand Dunes National Park where he once worked. 1944 Dr. Richard R.P. Warner writes that he is "still working fulltime at (his) medical practice, research and teaching. Horace Mann Magazine adds: Dr. Warner, along with his patients and family members, founded the Carcinoid Cancer Foundation in 1968 to perpetuate his research relating to serotonin and carcinoid syndrome. Among his scores of publications on cancer is the publication, in 1958, of his research that presented the first description of carcinoid syndrome resulting from bronchial carcinoid. Today Dr. Warner is Professor of Medicine, Director of the Center for Carcinoid/ Neuroendocrine Tumors at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and Medical Director of the Carcinoid Cancer Foundation. 1947 Peter J. Schlesinger writes, "After 26 years of retirement living in Florida, we sold our home in February 2015. We are now living in Bedminster, N.J. not too far from our son Avram (Schlesinger '90 [HM] faculty for over 15 years) and our granddaughter Alie." Prof. Andrew Hacker, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Political Science at Queens College in New York and a former math professor as well, published The Math Myth: And Other STEM Delusions in March 2016. (to be covered in next issue of Horace Mann Magazine.) 1948 Bob Sandler and his wife Barbara celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary in December 2015 "and our third great grandchild" in July 2015. He writes: "I stay in touch with several classmates. All is good. I'm still vertical!" Jay Miller writes: "Still actively practicing law. Mostly involved as a director of large financial institutions here and in Europe." 1949 Dr. Theodore Jacobs wrote: "I am continuing to practice psychoanalysis and psychotherapy in New York City and have published a collection of essays on psychoanalysis called The Possible Profession; The Analytic Process of Change. I am also working on my second novel, this time a mystery-romance." Richard Kleid informs classmates that he is still on the Town Council in Palm Beach, Fla. "having won hotly contested election. At end of present term will have served 11 years. Also, acting as an alumnus interviewer for Columbia College." Dan Alexander received the inaugural Lifetime Achievement in Soccer Award in October 2015 from the Jewish Sports Heritage Association Horace Mann Magazine Summer 2016 43 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Professor_Emeritus https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queens_College https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queens_College http://www.alice150.com
