Class Notes
continue to travel worldwide doing occupational medicine research, especially related to
asbestos and other occupational lung diseases.
I have served as an advisor both in the U.S.
and overseas on occupational health issues.
Married for 40 years, Joanne and I have three
kids and two grandchildren." Dr. Frank also
wrote of his former Barnard Head of School
Dr. Carrington Raymond: "I still remember
with great fondness Mr. Raymond." Dr. Stuart
Kassan became a Master of the American
College of Rheumatology and was elected as a
Distinguished Clinical Professor of Medicine at
the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
1965
Jeffrey Brosk opened an exhibit of his sculp-
ture in the show "Territory" at the Blue Star
Contemporary Museum in San Antonio, TX
with a gallery walk through and artist's talk on
Sept. 3, 2015, during which he described the
concepts and inspirations behind his wooden
sculptures in the exhibition.
New Yorkers had a chance to view new
works by Brosk at SPIN Ceramics in SoHo in
an exhibit that ran from November 5, 2015
through January 2016. Horace Mann School's
Alumni Council (HMAC), of which Brosk is a
member, hosted its annual Winter Gathering
at the gallery on January 20, 2016. Prof.
Arthur Jacobson, the Max Freund Professor
of Litigation and Advocacy at Benjamin
Cardozo School of Law co-authored the book
Jewish Law and Contemporary Issues, which
was published in October 2015. (See p. 38)
Howard Blum published Dark Invasion 1915:
Germany's Secret War and the Hunt for the
First Terrorist Cell in America in 2014. Blum
specializes in nonfiction narrative showcasing explosive periods in U.S. history, as in his
2011 Edgar Award-winning book American
Lightning. Dark Invasion focuses on the period
before WWI, when German saboteurs in the
U.S. attempted to weaken the country enough
to keep it from entering the war on the side of
the Allies. But many of the plots were thwarted
by New York Police Inspector Tom Tunney,
who also captured numerous enemy agents.
Academy Award-winning actor Bradley Cooper
is co-producing a movie based on the book,
and starring as its hero Tunney. Prof. Henry
Schvey regretted not being able to attend his
Class of 1965 reunion, but he was celebrating
the wedding of his daughter that weekend. He
sent an update to classmates titled "My Life
since Horace Mann" in which he described a
life "full of blessings" and wrote "I feel fortunate
beyond my wildest dreams." Married for over
46 years to Patty Lynn Cohn, the couple has
three "beautiful, successful children" who are
all involved in socially-significant work, and two
beautiful grandchildren, born five weeks apart
in 2012. Classmates can learn more details
about Prof. Schvey's activities since graduating from HM in the note he compiled for the
reunion (available upon request from alumni@
horacemann.org) In short, after studying
Comparative Literature at the University of
Wisconsin, Prof. Schvey completed his MA
in West European Studies and a Ph.D. in
Comparative Literature at the University of
Indiana. He became a professor of English at
Leiden University in the Netherlands in 1974,
and lived and taught in Holland until returning to the U.S. in 1987. Upon his return to
the U.S. he was named Professor of Drama
and Comparative Literature and Chair of the
Performing Arts Department at Washington
University in St. Louis, serving as Chair for 20
years before stepping down in 2007. While at
WU he created an undergraduate summer
program in London in 1990 in conjunction with
Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, making WU the
first American university to establish formal
links with Sam Wanamaker's rebuilt Globe.
Henry also established a program affiliated
with the Actor's Studio and brought legendary actor/teachers to campus to work with
students. Prof. Schvey is also a playwright who
has directed numerous plays in Europe and the
U.S. His book The Poison Tree: A Memoir, was
published in June 2016. It "examines childhood
and adolescence-including those painful,
exciting years at HM" of which Prof. Schvey expressed cherished memories. (To be covered
in the next issue of Horace Mann Magazine)

Jersey. Rowan is the newest state-designated
research university in New Jersey. I have been
at Rowan for three years now and enjoy the
opportunity to help build a new research university. My main responsibility is to oversee our two
medical schools, Rowan School of Osteopathic
Medicine and Cooper Medical School of Rowan
University." Dr. Blank is a noted molecular pathologist and cancer researcher who previously
served as Senior Vice Provost for Research
and Graduate Education at Temple University.
