Memorials
Robert Judell '41, Textile Industry
Leader and HM Supporter
Horace Mann School mourns the death of
Robert Judell '41 on March 18, 2016 in Palm
Beach, Fla. A 1945 graduate of Yale University
Judell served as a naval officer during WWII
and made multiple voyages across the Atlantic
on destroyer escort ships. He eventually
became the third generation president of
James Thompson and Company basic textile weavers and finishers,
where he took great pride in developing new products that used his
fabrics. An avid golfer, he belonged to Quaker Ridge Golf Club for over 70
years and was president from 1981-83. He was secretary of his class at
Yale and active in the 100 Years Association. He adored Sun Valley,
where he and his wife Eileen summered for over 30 years. Bob Judell is
remembered for his quick wit, intellectual curiosity, warmth, and charm.
He loved orchids, fine food, socializing and world travel. He is survived by
his wife Eileen Weiler, daughters Debra Mamorsky (Jeffrey), Tera Judell,
Andrea Markowitz (Alan), step-children Pamela Grayson (Douglas),
Andrew Weiler (Cecilia) and eight grandchildren.
William J. "Mickey" Corcoran '42,
Former HM Coach and Football Legend
www.nydailynews.com
William J. "Mickey" Corcoran '42 passed away
on Nov. 29, 2015 of a brain tumor. Corcoran
grew up in Englewood, N.J. and played
basketball and football at St. Cecilia High
School when legendary coach Vince Lombardi
coached both sports. Lombardi gave Corcoran
his nickname, originally calling him "Mickey
Mouse" because of the alum's small stature. Corcoran joined the HM
Class of 1942 in the Sixth Form, and was on the Varsity football, basketball
and baseball teams. After HM, he entered the Navy during World War II
as an athletic instructor at the Naval Air Base in Sea Island, Ga., where
John Wooden was the coach. Corcoran succeeded Wooden as the Base
coach, and then went to Springfield College in Massachusetts, graduating with an education degree in 1948. He returned to HM as a physical
education teacher in 1949 and coached JV basketball, Varsity soccer
and golf, and assisted with JV football and baseball through spring 1956.
Moving on to River Dell High School as the varsity basketball coach
Corcoran met Bill Parcells, then a student on the team, and became a
great inspiration to the future N.F.L. Hall-of-Famer. Corcoran left River
Dell in 1967 to become the athletic director and basketball coach at
Northern Highlands High School in Allendale, N.J. Remaining there for
the next 18 years he became a prominent figure in N.J. athletics, and
continued to be a mentor to Parcells. Corcoran is survived by his wife,
Dolores McGrath Corcoran, a daughter, JoAnne Kehoe; three sons,
Michael, Billy and Mark, 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Another daughter, Patricia, died in the early 2000s.
Claire Rosenstein '42, Television Pioneer
Horace Mann School notes the death of Claire Rosenstein '42 on January
23, 2015. Rosenstein worked with composer Aaron Copland, and became
a TV writer in television's early days, for Steve Allen's original "Tonight
Show" and NBC's "Project XX" among others. She later worked as an
archivist for New York City, and is survived by loving nieces and nephews.
James Salter '42,
Novelist and Short Story Writer
Known as a "Writer's Writer"
With sadness Horace Mann School reports the
death of James Salter on June 19, 2015. Born
James Horowitz, after HM he went to West Point
and joined the Army Air Corps (later the Air
Force) and trained as an Air Force pilot. Along
the way he earned a masters' degree at
Georgetown University in 1950, but continued
his Air Force service in the Korean War as a MiG hunting unit pilot who flew
100 missions between February 12 and August 6, 1952. He began writing
while in the Air Force, which he left in 1957 to write fulltime after the
1956 publication, to critical acclaim, of his first novel The Hunters, which
was made into a movie. Published under the pseudonym Salter to stave
off criticism from the military which his writing often referenced, the
author then legally changed his name. James Salter went on to write the
novels The Arm of Flesh (1961), the acclaimed A Sport and a Pastime
(1967), Light Years (1975), and Solo Faces (1979). Salter's screenplays
included 1969's "Downhill Racer" and "The Appointment" and, in 1981,
"Three" and "Threshold" (1981). His short story collections included Dusk
and Other Stories (1988) for which he received the PEN/Faulkner Award,
and Last Night (2005). Salter's Still Such (1988) is a collection of poetry. He
twice published memoirs: Burning the Days (1997) and Gods of Tin (2004).
Salter's essays and travel writing appear in There and Then (2005) and
Life is Meals 2006, written with his wife Kay Eldridge. Memorable Days: The
Selected Letters of James Salter and Robert Phelps and the short stories
My Lord You and Palm Court were published in 2006. Salter's Collected
Stories came out in 2013, the same year the author wowed critics with the
publication, at age 88, of the beautiful All That Is. Salter and his first wife
Ann, who divorced in 1975, were the parents of four children. Salter is
survived by his wife journalist and playwright Kay Eldridge, and by children
Nina, Claude, James and Theo, and was predeceased by son Allan.

Roger Mayer '43,
Advocate for Film Preservation
The HM community was saddened by the death
of Roger Mayer '43 on March 24, 2015. A
renowned champion for film preservation
Mayer graduated from Yale University and Yale
Law School. After nine years in the legal
department of Columbia Pictures he joined
MGM as assistant general manager of its
Culver City studios in 1961. An MGM executive showing Mayer around the
lot led him into concrete vaults with 130-degree F temperatures where
film footage was stored and rotting, and told Mayer to keep the vaults
and their content secure. Mayer persuaded MGM to pay for refrigerated
facilities and to establish a film preservation program, before home
