Memorials
Dr. Daniel Melicow Malcolm '46,
Hematologist and Oncologist
(provided by John Malcom '78)
Dr. Daniel Malcolm of Tenafly, N.J. passed away on June 13, 2015. After
graduating from Horace Mann School, Dan earned his undergraduate degree from Columbia University and his medical degree from the
Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He also earned
a master's degree from Indiana University. Dan spent most of his career
in private practice as a hematologist and oncologist at Holy Name Hospital
in Teaneck, N.J. Dr. Malcolm and his wife Marian (Dr. Marian Malcolm),
whom he met while he was at Columbia, were married for 63 years and had
three children. They developed a shared passion for African art, eventually
acquiring one of the most important private collections in the U.S., sharing
this passion with other collectors throughout the world. Dan cherished
his experience at Horace Mann, and maintained a long-term friendship
with both Alfred and Charlotte Baruth, who were regular visitors to the
Malcolm's home. He was delighted that his oldest son John chose to attend
his alma mater, and graduated in 1978. Dr. Malcolm is survived by his wife Dr.
Marian Malcolm, son John (Mary Lee) Malcolm '78, daughter Betsy (Michael
Lebowitz) and son Jim (Jodi Logan) Malcolm, and by four grandchildren.
William Sokolin '47,
Wine Connoisseurship Pioneer
Horace Mann School records with sadness the April 28, 2015 death
of William Sokolin '47. Sokolin excelled in sports at HM and at Tufts
University, was signed by Branch Rickey to play baseball for the Brooklyn
Dodgers, and played for the Hornell (N.Y.) Dodgers, until he left to serve
in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Upon his return he went into the
liquor business his father had opened on Madison Avenue in 1934. There
Sokolin discovered a passion for wine long before wine connoisseurship
reached the masses in America. By 1959 he had innovatively changed
the store's focus from liquor to wine. A pioneering force in the fine and
rare wine business Sokolin was considered one of the leading experts
on wine and wine investing, essentially inventing the concept of fine
wine investment in the Bordeaux market in the mid-1960s. He published
Liquid Assets: How to Develop an Enjoyable and Profitable Wine Portfolio
in 1987 and The Complete Wine Investor in 1998. Known for his consideration to customers as well as his vast wine knowledge, Sokolin famously
asked: "What is the definition of a good wine? It should start and end
with a smile." He is survived by his wife, Gloria Sokolin; children, Deanne
(Glenn Goldstein) Sokolin '82 and David Sokolin, and two grandchildren.

Lawrence Van Gelder '49,
Reporter, Film Critic and
New York Times Columnist
Horace Mann School mourns the death of
Lawrence Van Gelder '49 on March 11, 2016.
Van Gelder worked in the newsrooms of five
New York City newspapers over 55 years, most
of them as a critic, columnist and editor at The
New York Times. He first sought a job in
journalism as a copy boy at The Times when he
was 15, but was told he was too young. He went on to graduate from
Columbia College and later from Columbia Law School but chose
journalism over the law at a time when NYC's newspapers were thriving.
Joining The Daily Mirror as a reporter in 1955 Van Gelder worked there
until the paper closed in 1963. He moved to The New York WorldTelegram and Sun doing rewrite and later worked for its short-lived
successor, The World Journal Tribune. After a brief stint at The Daily
News, Van Gelder, then 34, was hired by The Times, where he accumulated more than 5,200 bylines as a reporter, film critic and obituary
writer. He also worked as an editor on the culture and metropolitan
desks, before retiring in 2010. He is survived by daughters Miranda Van
Tony Cenicola/The New York Times
video, cable and satellite TV provided commercial reasons to do so.
Mayer became president of MGM Laboratories, and, in 1986, moved to
Turner Entertainment as president and chief executive when Ted Turner
acquired the MGM library. Mayer founded and chaired the National Film
Preservation Foundation in 1997 to help archivists save and restore
hundreds of newsreels, documentaries, silent movies and more, that are
today stored in meticulously climate-controlled settings, because of
Mayer's efforts, saving hundreds of films. In 1996 the Library of Congress
was mandated to establish the National Film Preservation Board. Mayer
became a board member. He was recognized at the 2005 Academy
Awards with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, for his film
preservation advocacy and his support of the Motion Picture & Television
Fund that provides healthcare and social services. Mayer is survived by
his wife Pauline, children Patty and Larry, and two granddaughters.
