Horace Mann - Summer 2016 - 64
Memorials
The death of Josef Raboy '59 on April 3, 2015 is mourned. A graduate
of Columbia University, after many years running his family businesses
in the hotel and insurance industries, Raboy devoted himself to the
non-profit world as Executive Director of Westchester Jewish Center in
Mamaroneck, N.Y. and Temple Israel Center in White Plains, N.Y., and as
a Rotary Club president. After retiring he had time to pursue his lifelong
love of golfing and achieved a golfer's dream of scoring a hole-in-one at
the Dunes in Sanibel, Fla. He is survived by his loving family: wife Paula
Raboy, children Sharon (Bob) Smith, Alan (Laurie) Raboy, 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and by his brother Edward Raboy '61,
niece Pamela Raboy '97 and nephew Ervin Raboy '99. His brother Marc
Raboy '67 passed away in June 2015.
Ronald Tropp '61, Attorney
Horace Mann School regrets the passing of Ronald Jack Tropp '61 on
September 16, 2015. An All-City football player at HM he played football
and lacrosse at Swarthmore. He then studied law at the University of
Wisconsin, Madison. After living in Tanzania for a year he practiced law
in California, where he lived the last 36 years of his life. He is survived
by Peggy, his wife of 50 years, and by his children Josh (Christina) and
Rebecca, and a granddaughter Sofia Secoya.
Dr. Emile Pincus '65, Psychiatrist
Horace Mann School is deeply saddened by the
death of Dr. Emile Pincus '65 on November 6,
2015, of an apparent heart attack. Dr. Pincus
graduated summa cum laude from Hunter
College-City University and Icahn School of
Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York,
where he also did his residency in psychiatry.
He did another psychiatry residency at Saint Luke's-Roosevelt, and was a
Fellow in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Department of
Psychiatry in Westchester. With specialties in diagnosis and treatment of
children's mental disorders he also specialized in drug abuse and suicide
prevention. Dr. Pincus was a psychiatrist for about 17 years at The Stony
Lodge Hospital in Ossining, N.Y., where he was also medical director for
two years, serving the hospital's child and adolescent population. He had
recently transitioned to a private practice in child, adolescent and adult
psychiatry in Montvale and River Edge, N.J. Regularly included in the
Castle Connolly list of Top Doctors in the N.Y. Metro Area, in 2014 he was
named one of ten Top Doctors in his field in New Jersey. Classmate Prof.
Henry Schvey '65 described Emile as "a true and loyal friend, and a born
leader. Anything we did was more interesting and exciting because he
was involved. His enthusiasm and zest for life were unmatched. Though
we had fallen out of touch over the years, he will be sorely missed." Dr.
Pincus was memorialized by numerous patients and their family
members as an "irreplaceable" doctor acknowledged for his kindness,
patience and thorough care. Friends knew him as the most supportive
father, grandfather, and spouse, who had an insatiable intellectual
curiosity and encyclopedic knowledge of subjects from sports to
philosophy to foreign cultures, and was fluent in French, Hebrew, Spanish
and Italian. Dr. Pincus greatly enjoyed connecting with HM classmates at
their 50th reunion, and touring the HM campus less than a month before

and by his brother Dr. Theodore Pincus.
Marc Raboy '67, Noted Photographer
Horace Mann School sadly notes the death of
Marc Raboy '67 on June 23, 2015. Raboy
studied design and photography at the Illinois
Institute of Technology, and earned a BS
degree in design. He returned to New York City
in 1973. After a short stint as an actor he
catapulted to the top of his profession as a
renowned freelance commercial photographer working from his
well-known studio in Chelsea, where he specialized in entertainment
photography, but was also highly sought after by the fashion and beauty
worlds. His subjects included Lucille Ball, Liza Minnelli, Harry Belafonte,
Chita Rivera, Patti LaBelle, Rob Lowe, Sean Penn, Kevin Bacon, Phylicia
Rashad, Candice Bergen and more, for whom he created iconic images
that are synonymous with the stars' own legacies. "Photography and
making people beautiful were the true passions of his life. With his keen
eye, remarkable sense of style, and uproarious sense of humor he has
created some of the most iconic images over a 25-year period," wrote
Raboy's husband Keith Henry on www.marcraboy.com. Along with
Henry, Raboy is survived by brother Edward Raboy '61, nephew Ervin
Raboy '99, niece Pamela Raboy '97 and many friends. He was predeceased in April 2015 by his brother Josef Raboy '59.

David Grossman '75,
Director of Harvard Legal Aid Bureau
and Champion of the Poor
Horace Mann School was deeply saddened by
the death of David Abraham Grossman '75 on
July 12, 2015, after a courageous battle with
cancer. A lawyer and teacher who devoted his
career to addressing the legal needs of the
poor Grossman graduated from Harvard
College summa cum laude in 1979, received a
Master's in Eastern Religions from Harvard Divinity School in 1983, and
earned his JD at Harvard Law School in 1988. Grossman began working
with indigent clients while in law school, through Harvard's Legal
Services Center (LSC). After a short stint with the New York law firm
Kramer Levin, and a few years at Community Lawyers in Jamaica Plain,
Mass. Grossman rejoined LSC in 1999 as a clinical instructor in its
housing unit, and served for 11 years as the unit's Managing Attorney.
There he revived a partnership with City Life/Vida Urbana, a community
organization focused on tenants' rights. With its coordinating director
Grossman developed a combined lawyering and organizing approach to
gentrification-driven rent increases that resulted in numerous
collective bargaining agreements with developers and in landlords
guaranteeing long-term stability and affordability for buildings with
tenants threatened with displacement. Grossman was appointed
director of the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau (HLAB) in 2006 by Supreme
Court Justice Elena Kagan, then Harvard Law School Dean. An exemplary teacher and unwavering activist Grossman was known for his
sharp yet warm humor and loyalty to friends. He is survived by his wife,
Stacy, son Lev, daughter, Shayna, sister Rachel, and in-laws.
