Memorials The death of Josef Raboy '59 on April 3, 2015 is mourned. A graduate of Columbia University, after many years running his family businesses in the hotel and insurance industries, Raboy devoted himself to the non-profit world as Executive Director of Westchester Jewish Center in Mamaroneck, N.Y. and Temple Israel Center in White Plains, N.Y., and as a Rotary Club president. After retiring he had time to pursue his lifelong love of golfing and achieved a golfer's dream of scoring a hole-in-one at the Dunes in Sanibel, Fla. He is survived by his loving family: wife Paula Raboy, children Sharon (Bob) Smith, Alan (Laurie) Raboy, 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and by his brother Edward Raboy '61, niece Pamela Raboy '97 and nephew Ervin Raboy '99. His brother Marc Raboy '67 passed away in June 2015. Ronald Tropp '61, Attorney Horace Mann School regrets the passing of Ronald Jack Tropp '61 on September 16, 2015. An All-City football player at HM he played football and lacrosse at Swarthmore. He then studied law at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. After living in Tanzania for a year he practiced law in California, where he lived the last 36 years of his life. He is survived by Peggy, his wife of 50 years, and by his children Josh (Christina) and Rebecca, and a granddaughter Sofia Secoya. Dr. Emile Pincus '65, Psychiatrist Horace Mann School is deeply saddened by the death of Dr. Emile Pincus '65 on November 6, 2015, of an apparent heart attack. Dr. Pincus graduated summa cum laude from Hunter College-City University and Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, where he also did his residency in psychiatry. He did another psychiatry residency at Saint Luke's-Roosevelt, and was a Fellow in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Department of Psychiatry in Westchester. With specialties in diagnosis and treatment of children's mental disorders he also specialized in drug abuse and suicide prevention. Dr. Pincus was a psychiatrist for about 17 years at The Stony Lodge Hospital in Ossining, N.Y., where he was also medical director for two years, serving the hospital's child and adolescent population. He had recently transitioned to a private practice in child, adolescent and adult psychiatry in Montvale and River Edge, N.J. Regularly included in the Castle Connolly list of Top Doctors in the N.Y. Metro Area, in 2014 he was named one of ten Top Doctors in his field in New Jersey. Classmate Prof. Henry Schvey '65 described Emile as "a true and loyal friend, and a born leader. Anything we did was more interesting and exciting because he was involved. His enthusiasm and zest for life were unmatched. Though we had fallen out of touch over the years, he will be sorely missed." Dr. Pincus was memorialized by numerous patients and their family members as an "irreplaceable" doctor acknowledged for his kindness, patience and thorough care. Friends knew him as the most supportive father, grandfather, and spouse, who had an insatiable intellectual curiosity and encyclopedic knowledge of subjects from sports to philosophy to foreign cultures, and was fluent in French, Hebrew, Spanish and Italian. Dr. Pincus greatly enjoyed connecting with HM classmates at their 50th reunion, and touring the HM campus less than a month before 64 Horace Mann Magazine Summer 2016 his sudden death. He is survived by his beloved wife Helen Weiss Pincus, children David (Michelle), Caroline and Joe Pincus, by four grandchildren, and by his brother Dr. Theodore Pincus. Marc Raboy '67, Noted Photographer Horace Mann School sadly notes the death of Marc Raboy '67 on June 23, 2015. Raboy studied design and photography at the Illinois Institute of Technology, and earned a BS degree in design. He returned to New York City in 1973. After a short stint as an actor he catapulted to the top of his profession as a renowned freelance commercial photographer working from his well-known studio in Chelsea, where he specialized in entertainment photography, but was also highly sought after by the fashion and beauty worlds. His subjects included Lucille Ball, Liza Minnelli, Harry Belafonte, Chita Rivera, Patti LaBelle, Rob Lowe, Sean Penn, Kevin Bacon, Phylicia Rashad, Candice Bergen and more, for whom he created iconic images that are synonymous with the stars' own legacies. "Photography and making people beautiful were the true passions of his life. With his keen eye, remarkable sense of style, and uproarious sense of humor he has created some of the most iconic images over a 25-year period," wrote Raboy's husband Keith Henry on www.marcraboy.com. Along with Henry, Raboy is survived by brother Edward Raboy '61, nephew Ervin Raboy '99, niece Pamela Raboy '97 and many friends. He was predeceased in April 2015 by his brother Josef Raboy '59. Eric Stephen Jacobs Josef Raboy '59, Hotel Industry Professional and Civic Volunteer David Grossman '75, Director of Harvard Legal Aid Bureau and Champion of the Poor Horace Mann School was deeply saddened by the death of David Abraham Grossman '75 on July 12, 2015, after a courageous battle with cancer. A lawyer and teacher who devoted his career to addressing the legal needs of the poor Grossman graduated from Harvard College summa cum laude in 1979, received a Master's in Eastern Religions from Harvard Divinity School in 1983, and earned his JD at Harvard Law School in 1988. Grossman began working with indigent clients while in law school, through Harvard's Legal Services Center (LSC). After a short stint with the New York law firm Kramer Levin, and a few years at Community Lawyers in Jamaica Plain, Mass. Grossman rejoined LSC in 1999 as a clinical instructor in its housing unit, and served for 11 years as the unit's Managing Attorney. There he revived a partnership with City Life/Vida Urbana, a community organization focused on tenants' rights. With its coordinating director Grossman developed a combined lawyering and organizing approach to gentrification-driven rent increases that resulted in numerous collective bargaining agreements with developers and in landlords guaranteeing long-term stability and affordability for buildings with tenants threatened with displacement. Grossman was appointed director of the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau (HLAB) in 2006 by Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan, then Harvard Law School Dean. An exemplary teacher and unwavering activist Grossman was known for his sharp yet warm humor and loyalty to friends.
