manage resources through the year, from time and
material to manpower," Vincent Chu, CEO of the team,
told MOMENTUM. "We identified that hitting an early
driving date and completing significant amounts of
testing prior to competition were essential to ensure
vehicle reliability, allow for tuning and setup, as well as to
provide our drivers with ample seat time.
"By largely sharing component designs across both
vehicles in the chassis, suspension, and aerodynamics
sections, the team was able to greatly reduce
required design time, and also reduce the load on
manufacturing-both internal and outsourced. This
ultimately allowed for a First Drive date of July 21-a full
four months ahead of the competition in December."
The team put in more than 1800 km of dynamic testing.
Overcoming packaging constraints with the electricpowered car was the biggest hurdle the team faced in
sharing components," said Chu. "While a single, inboard
Emrax 228 motor in the electric vehicle allowed for very
similar drivetrain setup as the IC car, its placement also
made packaging an identical aerodynamic undertray, as
MOMENTUM
featured on the combustion car, impossible. Given our self-constrained
design period, the decision was made for M17-E to run with only a front
and rear wing. Packaging of the accumulator also needed to be taken
into account in both chassis and driver ergonomic design for the electric
car."
By sharing component design across the two cars, "the team was able
to successfully double vehicle production without requiring twice the
amount of manpower or funding," Chu said. "The 2017 Monash design
ethos of simplicity, reliability, and low parts count allowed the team to
hit all but one of its targeted milestones for both vehicles, including the
targeted First Drive date, which ultimately led to two high performing,
reliable vehicles at competition."
In 2017, the Autocross and Endurance events reverted to the European
competition format, with Autocross limited to two drivers with two runs
each and Endurance limited to a single heat, placing a much higher
emphasis on vehicle reliability.
FSAE-Australia is not governed by SAE International, but is recognized
as an official Collegiate Design Series competition.
