COVER STORY Deep pool of volunteers keeps SAE humming Thousands of individuals invest time and energy on SAE's behalf to help it achieve its mission. Volunteers at Baja SAE California 2019 help a disabled competition vehicle out of a jam. Dig beneath the surface of any SAE International event and you'll unearth scores of volunteers doing their earnest best to make the event fruitful for those attending. You don't always have to dig deep. Many of the volunteers are in plain sight at events-chairing technical sessions at WCX, inspecting a student team's remote- 12 July 2019 controlled plane at an SAE Aero Design collegiate competition, or carrying out any number of other volunteer tasks on SAE's behalf. But for every volunteer one might see, there's likely another who remains unseen, such as the roughly 27,000 individuals who work on technical committees that write SAE standards. UPDATE
