MEMBER NEWS Dossier: Scott Curran of Oak Ridge National Laboratory Team engaged in first running engine experiments at Vulcan beamline at SNS. was able to be the outreach advisor in an adjunct role for the UT EcoCAR 2 and EcoCAR 3 hybrid vehicle design teams, which were part of the DOE Advanced Vehicle Technology Competition (AVTC) series, and that was very rewarding working with future science communicators. In what way is SAE helpful to you in your job? The SAE technical papers and technical meetings are interwoven into my job. There has not been a single paper I have written that has not included at least a couple of SAE Technical or SAE Journal paper citations. It is important to me to present the most recent research at the SAE technical meetings where researchers from industry, academia, and research institutions like 12 December 2019 national labs all come together. Being a researcher in an applied energy discipline like engine systems and fuel effects research, it is important to be able to engage with industry as well as more basic energy researchers, which SAE technical meetings bridge very well. In addition, getting to know graduate students through the SAE paper review process as a session organizer and chair and even as a participant has been extremely valuable in recruiting post-doc and post-masters research fellows to ORNL.
