DOSSIER: Jim McCarthy of Eaton Corp. MEMBER NEWS Young engineers brought together in party by McCarthy (second from right, standing) for a panel session on powertrain at SAE's COMVEC conference in 2019. What advice can you offer current and prospective SAE Members? Take advantage of the journal publication and speaking opportunities at SAE. These are excellent for your career development, as they force you to execute your projects well and allow you to meet key people in your field. Additionally, try to become involved in the SAE panels (many opportunities at SAE COMVEC) as either an organizer, moderator, or speaker. What do you like to do in your free time? Watching my daughter and son work hard with their academics and compete in their sports. UPDATE Any other thoughts? I share the following philosophy with my colleagues when conducting a project: plan your projects as if you will be writing a paper and presenting it in front of 500 people. I feel that this forces better planning (and thinking up front), which in turn causes better execution. The result is commonly an excellent technical work package for your company to evaluate. I encourage others to spend the time needed to make the figures well the first time, as it is very timeconsuming to remake them later. Upon completion, you may have the option to publish your work in a venue such as SAE, assuming it meets your company objectives. February 2020 19
