BOEING CEO ADDRESSES SAE AEROTECH CONGRESS
Dennis Muilenburg, President and Chief Executive Officer,
The Boeing Company, gave the keynote address at the SAE
2015 AeroTech Congress & Exhibition on September 22 in
Seattle, Washington.
He discussed how "innovation" goes beyond product to
include global partnerships, manufacturing processes, and
talent development, which he cited as "the most important
investment that we're going to make."
"It is our responsibility to invest in this next generation of
talent," he said, noting that about half of the experienced
aerospace workforce will be eligible to retire in the next 5-7
years. "I would challenge all of you to think about what you're
doing to develop that next wave of talent. I challenge all of us
to have individual mentoring relationships to develop that next
wave of talent. That is probably the biggest multiplier effect
we can have as leaders."
Dennis Muilenburg, President and Chief Executive Officer, The Boeing
Company, during his keynote address at the SAE 2015 AeroTech
Congress & Exhibition, September 22 in Seattle.
Boeing was the main industry supporter of the AeroTech
event, sponsoring the banquet and providing leadership
in development of the conference. Todd W. Zarfos, Vice
President, Washington Design Center and Engineering
Functions, Boeing Commercial Airplanes, served as Executive
Chair of the four-day event. A member of SAE International's
Board of Directors, Zarfos was joined by other highranking Boeing engineers in development of the AeroTech
management and technical programs. Many additional
Boeing engineers participated and/or attended the biennial
conference, which rotates between Seattle and other cities.
While addressing talent is important, engineers still have
to get the job done, Muilenburg said. And they must do it
in a global economy and in an aerospace industry that is
changing in many different ways. For one thing, collaboration
is becoming ever more important, and the distinction between
competitor and collaborator becoming fuzzier. He pointed
to the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC)
illustrates that point.

"They're a very important industrial partner for us in China
today-a key part of our supply chain," he said. That
partnership helps Boeing expand its footprint in China and
expand its aircraft sales worldwide. At the same time, COMAC
is developing its own aircraft, the narrow-body C919, "which
ultimately will be a [competitor] in the marketplace," he said.
To conclude his keynote, Muilenburg said: "When lives depend
on what we do in such a literal way, it demands a sense of
excellence in how we do it, and that should demand integrity
and the ultimate excellence in how we invest in the future.
That's a very important part of what we are as a community."
He noted that Boeing now delivers more than 70% of its
commercial airplanes to customers outside the U.S. And in
the defense/space sector, more than 35% of its customers are
located outside the U.S.
