architecture, and the threat of cybersecurity as areas where
standards can support the military users. Kratz noted that
the F-35 is the first fighter aircraft developed by a global
industrial base utilizing global industry standards.
The event featured panel discussions on technologies
including additive manufacturing, lithium-ion batteries,
hybrid-electric propulsion, condition-based maintenance,
REACH compliance, and materials substitution. Each panel
was introduced by a subject matter expert who explained the
landscape of possibilities, standards, and challenges, followed
by presentations from leading industry and regulatory
experts who expressed diverse perspectives on the issues
faced in standardizing that particular emerging technology.
Steve George of Rolls-Royce speaks during the Materials Substitution
and REACH Compliance session at the 2015 SAE Aerospace Standards
Summit.

Baker discussed the shift within the safety continuum to a more
balanced, risk-based approach for certification dependent upon
the aircraft's use in the spectrum of flight operations. She cited
SAE's fuel cells safety guidelines as a means of compliance
that provides manufacturers with the ability to develop new
products that are not yet able to be certified.
MacStravic and Gold emphasized the importance of
interoperability, the need to embrace modular open systems

All of the emerging technologies discussed at the Summit
have associated SAE aerospace standards committees:
AMS-AM (additive manufacturing), AE-7B (lithium-ion
batteries), Electrical Aircraft Steering Group (hybridelectric propulsion), HM-1 and G-11SHM (condition-based
maintenance), and E-1 (materials substitution and REACH
compliance). If you are interested in participating in these
committees, please contact Laura Feix, at laura.feix@sae.org.
The next SAE Aerospace Standards Summit will be held in
Europe in 2017.

SAE INTERNATIONAL, EUROCAE SIGN UPDATED MEMORANDUM OF COOPERATION
SAE International and the European Organization for Civil
Aviation Equipment (EUROCAE) have signed an updated
memorandum of cooperation (MoC) that strengthens the
cooperation between the two standards-developing bodies
in providing necessary technical standards for the global
aerospace industry.
The MoC was signed September 22 during the SAE Aerospace
Council's 146th meeting, held in conjunction with the SAE 2015
AeroTech Congress in Seattle.
The two organizations' standards and other technical
documents will support the work of ICAO, EASA, FAA, and
other regulatory and certification bodies.
"We are extremely pleased to continue our collaboration with
EUROCAE," said Ed Manns, Manager, Aerospace Standards,
SAE International. "EUROCAE has been a leader in aviation
standards for more than 50 years, and we look forward to
developing standards for the benefit of the entire aerospace
engineering industry."
"SAE International has played an important role in the
development of global consensus aerospace standards
for nearly 100 years," said Christian Schleifer-Heingärtner,
Secretary General of EUROCAE. "We are excited to continue
this partnership with SAE International and look forward to the
work we will do together."

Ed Manns, Manager, Aerospace Standards, SAE International, and
Christian Schleifer-Heingärtner, Secretary General, EUROCAE, finalize
the organizations' memorandum of cooperation.

Both SAE International and EUROCAE are respected for their
experience in developing consensus standards, and leveraging
industry expertise to solve problems and advance the aviation
industry, particularly in the areas of safety assessment, lightning
protection, aircraft hydrogen fuel cells, and icing protection for
air data instruments.
