SAE ELECTRIC AIRCRAFT STEERING GROUP HOLDS SECOND MEETING MAY 17-18 IN
PARIS, FRANCE
Established in 2015, the group is working to create a
landscape and gap analysis for the standardization needed
to accomplish increased electrification, and coordinate and
support the various standardization activities of SAE technical
standards committees which are working to support more
electric aircraft applications at the platform level as well as for
systems and components.
At the May meeting, the group held a scoping exercise and
standards landscape exercise. The group is working to identify
where there are gaps in standards, and whether or not needed
standards can be undertaken by existing committees.
Among the scope topics discussed were: subsystems;
propulsion; certification; supporting infrastructure; power
generation and distribution; energy storage; operations;
maintenance; safety; testing, V&V (systems engineering);
and controls.
The committee will next meet September 27-29 in Hartford,
Connecticut, in conjunction with the SAE Aerospace Systems
and Technology Conference.
THREE QPL'S MADE AVAILABLE BY COMPOSITES MATERIAL COMMITTEE
Responsible for developing and maintaining material
specifications and other SAE technical reports for composite
materials, including prepregs, reinforcing fibers and fabrics,
matrix resins, adhesives, and core materials, the SAE AMS
P-17, Polymer Matrix Composites Committee recently
announced the availability of the following QPL's related to
these aerospace materials specifications:
be used for the manufacture of primary and secondary
aircraft structure.
* AMS3914A, Advanced Composites Prepreg - Nominal 250 °F
Cure - 12K Tow Carbon Fiber and Epoxy Resin, Plain Weave
Fabric
The prepreg is a plain weave fabric with 12K tows, a nominal
fiber areal weight of 193 gsm, and nominal resin content
of 42%.
The committee works in conjunction with related bodies
such as the Composite Materials Handbook -17 (CMH-17),
ASTM Committee D30 on Composite Materials, the National
Center for Advanced Materials Performance (NCAMP), the
Performance Review Institute (PRI), and regulatory authorities
such as FAA and EASA.
* AMS3960A, Revised: Advanced Composites Prepreg Nominal 250 °F Cure - Carbon Fiber and Epoxy Resin,
Unidirectional Tape
Widely distributed and available industry material
specifications are required for procurement of composite
materials whose allowables data is published in CMH-17.
* AMS3915A, Advanced Composites Prepreg - Nominal 250 °F
Cure - Glass Fiber and Epoxy Resin, 7781 Weave Fabric
The prepreg has a nominal fiber areal weight of 294 gsm, and
nominal resin content of 38%.
This material is intended for use in laminate applications with
a service temperature of -65 to 180 °F. The composite may
