1072-patient phase III trial, 19.6% of patients treated with
rimegepant were pain-free and 37.6% were free of their most
bothersome symptoms at 2 hours compared with 12% and
25.2% who received placebo. Biohaven Pharmaceuticals
announced that in a 1351-patient phase III trial, 21.2% of
patients treated with rimegepant in an orally dissolving tablet
formulation were pain-free and 35.1% were free of their most
bothersome symptoms at 2 hours compared with 10.9% and
26.8% who received placebo.13
A look at the absolute risk reduction with ubrogepant,
rimegepant, and lasmiditan suggests a benefit over placebo
(Table 1). The drugs have not been compared directly with
an active treatment, so the information in the table is for
reference of what is currently known about the drugs and
does not take into account differences in trial design or
patient populations. These 3 drugs may provide an alternative treatment for acute migraine patients who are intolerant
to triptans.
