Facing Unconscious Bias in Medicine

Session Description: Unconscious, or implicit, biases have
been shown to influence educational advancement, the criminal
justice system, and health care delivery. This session will reveal
the role of unconscious bias at various levels of medicine from
medical school to medical practice that affect our decision making, actions, and understanding of others. The presenters will
define unconscious bias and the role these biases play in the
professional advancement of women and underrepresented
minorities and the doctor-patient relationship. Lastly, the role of
cultural competency in medicine will be discussed along with
strategies to mitigate these biases when interacting with students, staff, physician colleagues, and patients.
Outcome Objectives: (1) Develop an awareness of unconscious bias. (2) Describe the various effects of unconscious
bias in medicine. (3) Identify strategies to mitigate bias through
cultural competency and cultural humility.
The Future of Otolaryngology Practice

Session Description: During the pandemic, the Future of
Otolaryngology Task Force, of the American Academy of
Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, provided Academy
members with timely updates and resources such as "Guidance
for Return to Practice for Otolaryngology-Head and Neck
Surgery." The task force continues to look at all aspects of current practice, including how the pandemic has changed practice now and ways to help shape practice in the future. Panelists
will share their thoughts on future practice models and how
they will look, including consolidation; the future of the regulatory and payment environment; and the future of education
and training and workforce issues.
The Future of Telemedicine in Otolaryngology

Session Description: The American Academy of Otolaryngology-
Head and Neck Surgery's Telemedicine Committee was reactivated last year and has been extremely active since. The pandemic
necessitated an urgent adoption of telemedicine by otolaryngo-
logists, who as a group were relatively inexperienced using the
technology. The panel, moderated by the committee's chair, will
review lessons learned from that experience as well as consider
future use. Panelists will also discuss the need for improved technology, how telemedicine fits into existing and future payment systems, and how the platform can increase access to specialty care.
How to Create a Wellness Curriculum at
Your Institution: Lessons Learned From the
Graduate Medical Education Experience

Session Description: The Accreditation Council for Graduate
Medical Education (ACGME) recently added "well-being" as a
core requirement for all residency programs, including otolaryngology. With physician-reported burnout at an all-time high,
it makes sense that otolaryngology residency programs should
be discussing wellness with their residents and faculty. All residency programs are tasked with teaching well-being to their
residents; however, there is no standard or guidance on how to
do this or track outcomes. During this panel presentation, you
will hear from otolaryngologists throughout the country who
have successfully implemented wellness programs and curriculums at their own institutions. These programs have targeted
and improved faculty well-being as well by placing wellness as
a priority within the department. All presenters will discuss
their journey implementing their own wellness programs, highlighting the pearls and pitfalls and sharing their methods of
assessing outcomes and analyzing the results. Discussion points
will include, but are not limited to, mindfulness-based interventions, using focus groups and resident needs-based assessment
tools, protected time for personal wellness, mentoring, exercise,
physical and mental health resources, nutrition, and incorporating resident and department social events. Although the focus
will be on resident wellness education, all otolaryngologists
should be able to leave this session feeling empowered and
obtain the tools to start a wellness program at their own institution, whether they are academicians responding to the
ACGME's "call to action" or private practice otolaryngologists
interested in wellness at their own institution.
Outcome Objectives: (1) Examine the epidemic and repercussions of physician burnout. (2) List the key components of
developing a residency wellness curriculum. (3) Demonstrate
the tools necessary to implement a wellness program at your
own institution.
How to Write Like a Pro: A Primer on
Paper Sprints, Publishing, and Academic
Productivity

Session Description: Drafting manuscripts-from idea conception to analysis and manuscript submission-can be a
lonely, precarious journey littered with the skeletons of unfinished projects. We've seen many bright trainees and faculty
spend hours, months, or years creating data sets without a clear
vision of the final product. Doing so is a waste of time. Others
struggle alone before a blank screen, making little headway
amid nagging electronic health record in-basket messages.
Thankfully, there is a better way-one that fosters success and
inoculates against burnout. In this panel, we provide tools to
turn early forays in scholarship from desolate paths fraught with
frustration to rich opportunities for cultivating relationships. We
open with the Paper Sprint, a structured method for writing
papers collaboratively. In Paper Sprints, the team rapidly synthesizes ideas in a 2-hour session, creates a project plan, and
uses the blueprint to catalyze efforts. In Paper Sprints, the team
