access in rural areas; however, telemedicine applications are
quickly evolving. Although telemedicine has gained popularity among primary care doctors, it has not been widely adopted
by otolaryngologists. Most otolaryngologists are unaware of
the advantages and benefits of "tele-otolaryngology." For
example, telemedicine platforms are now available that provide Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act-
compliant video communication for patients who call after
hours with concerns like a postoperative tonsil bleed or
epistaxis. Most otolaryngologists also lack strategies to incorporate telemedicine into their practices in a cost-effective
manner. This panel, supported by the Young Physicians
Section and the Head and Neck Education Committee, aims to
equip practicing otolaryngologists with the tools to begin
using telemedicine in their daily workflow. Panelists will provide practical, step-by-step outlines and concrete examples of
when and how to incorporate telemedicine into a variety of
otolaryngology practice settings. Other pertinent topics that
will be highlighted include a review of available hardware and
software, malpractice concerns, and reimbursement methods.
Our panel will feature a diverse group of practitioners with
experience using telemedicine in different settings, including
private practice, academic medicine, tertiary medical groups,
and rural medicine.
Outcome Objectives: (1) Evaluate the utility of teleotolaryngology as a safe, effective, and efficient form of patient care.
(2) Become familiar with current hardware/software and
begin to implement these into daily practice. (3) Review common billing and malpractice concerns when incorporating
these into clinical use.
To Care Is Human: Navigating the Pathway
From Burnout to Surgeon Wellness and
Resilience

Session Description: Burnout exacts a staggering toll on the
health of clinicians. We are at an inflection point, with most
physicians reporting symptoms of burnout. The moral imperative to address physician wellness is nowhere more evident than
in physician suicide-estimated at 1 physician per day. Our
panel shares diverse perspectives, revealing the startling impact
of burnout on patient experience, medical errors, resource overuse, drug use, and mortality. We examine how excessive workload, electronic health records, intrusions on autonomy,
workplace design, and injurious interactions predispose to
burnout. We highlight underrecognized interpersonal triggers
and consider how burnout, with its small, repetitive injuries,
mirrors a stress fracture-in which minute cracks weaken
healthy bone to breaking. Thus, recurring stressors can induce
burnout in healthy, normal clinicians. We then show pathophysiological changes that occur in times of stress, dissecting the
scientific basis for burnout. We next provide evidence-based
interventions to support clinician well-being and resilience.
Tremendous resources have been invested to determine what

causes burnout and what is effective in prevention and treatment. We present practical, empirically proven techniques that
work, sharing salient findings of the landmark 2019 National
Academy of Medicine report, Taking Action Against Burnout:
A Systems Approach to Professional Well-Being. We invite
audience engagement as we discuss clinical practice design,
culture of wellness, and promotion of resilience. Finally, we
close by exploring how to create a culture of personal safety,
build safe havens, and implement system-wide interventions
for combating this hidden epidemic. This session empowers
otolaryngologists with tools to embark on a successful journey
from burnout to wellness.
Outcome Objectives: (1) Review the predisposing factors,
triggers, and biological changes of burnout and identify common presenting features. (2) Describe how to live a healthy
life and achieve successful work-life integration in an era
increasingly defined by technology. (3) Evaluate and apply
interventions that have been successful in reducing burnout
and improving wellness in health care professionals.

Session Description: The Triological Society Best Practice
Section in The Laryngoscope provides a forum for otolaryngologists to explore controversial subjects within their specialty. The authors pick the 5 best manuscripts from recent
literature and make suggestions on best practices for the
given topic. The authors will critically evaluate the level of
evidence for the selected manuscripts and come up with best
practice recommendations for the otolaryngology community. They cover all subspecialties within otolaryngology.
These articles have become highly sought after and are a
must-read for many subscribers of The Laryngoscope. This
panel session will present the 5 "Trio Best Practice" articles
from the last year. Each author will present his or her findings, followed by a question-and-answer period at the end for
audience participation.
Outcome Objectives: (1) Review best practices for management of controversial topics covering all subspecialties within
otolaryngology. (2) Examine how the authors critically evaluate
the level of evidence of the selected articles from The Laryn-
goscope. (3) Discuss the important findings of the literature
selected and how to apply when making practice decisions.
