demographic, pathologic, and treatment data. Each variable
was assessed for significance using Kaplan-Meier analysis
and Cox proportional hazard analysis.
Results: Most patients were younger than 60 years (82.3%),
male (55.3%), and white (79.5%). The most common treatment modality was surgery alone (79.0%). The 5-year overall
survival was 94.1%. No significant difference was found in
survival between patients who had received surgery alone or
those who had received surgery with radiation therapy and/or
chemotherapy. In addition, race, size of the tumor, and time
from diagnosis to any treatment were not associated with survival outcomes. Accounting for other demographic and clinicopathologic factors, a diagnosis at or above age 60 is
associated with decreased survival (hazard ratio 7.21, P <
.001). The primary insurance method was also found to affect
survival outcomes; patients with private insurance had higher
survival rates than those on Medicaid (P < .001).
Conclusions: Head and neck DFSP has a relatively good
prognosis. However, certain factors may lead to higher mortality, including age older than 60 and having Medicaid rather
than private insurance. The results of this study do not indicate
that the augmentation of surgery with radiation or chemotherapy improves outcomes for head and neck DFSP.
A National Cancer Database Analysis of
Head and Neck Paragangliomas

Objectives: Head and neck paragangliomas (PGs) are rare
neuroendocrine tumors for which standardized treatment has
not been established. This study uses a national data set to
update current understanding of presentation patterns and
treatment outcomes.
Methods: The National Cancer Database (NCDB) was queried for patients aged ≥18 years diagnosed with head and neck
PG from 2004 to 2016. Survival by extent of disease (local,
regional, distant, and benign vs malignant) and treatment (surgery [S], radiation [RT], surgery + radiation [S/RT]) was analyzed using log-rank tests, Kaplan-Meier, and multivariable
Cox-proportional hazards regression.
Results: Of 418 patients identified (48.4% <50 years, 42.1%
male), 54.8% had malignant disease, and 5-year overall survival was 77.2%. Among the most common primary sites,
carotid body (CB; n = 183; 65% malignant), glomus jugulare
(GJ; n = 34; 8.8% malignant), and other paraganglia (OP; n =
128; 58.6% malignant), there was no significant survival difference on adjusted analysis (P = .5992-.9534). For patients
with CB, unadjusted analysis was associated with increased
mortality in RT vs S (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.93, P = .0273), no
difference in S vs SRT (HR = 0.78, P = .4156), and decreased
mortality in SRT vs RT (HR = 0.41, P = .0044). However,
there were no significant survival differences by treatment on
adjusted analysis (P = .5049-.7119). For malignant disease,
mortality risk was higher for RT relative to S (HR = 2.82, P =

.0168) and lower for S/RT relative to RT (HR = 0.31, P =
.0120) on unadjusted analysis.
Conclusions: Our study demonstrates a possible benefit of S/RT
over RT in treatment of CB and malignant PGs. Although low
population limited comparative analysis, further characterization
of treatment efficacy would be beneficial in standardized
treatment.
Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma in Spain:
A 40-Year Survival Study

Objectives: The mortality of nasopharyngeal carcinoma
(NPC) is gradually declining with the improvement in local
control achieved by new treatments. The objective was to analyze the incidence, overall survival (OS), and disease-specific
survival (DSS) of patients with NPC in northern Spain.
Methods: Data of patients diagnosed with NPC between
1978 and 2018 were obtained from a hospital-based cancer
registry. Several parameters were retrospectively obtained
from the clinical charts. Statistical analysis was performed
using the SPSS program and the Kaplan-Meier method for
survival analysis. To test the statistical significance, the logrank test was applied.
Results: A total of 154 patients aged 17 to 91 years were
diagnosed with NPC, of which 73% were lymphoepithelioma
and 23% squamous cell carcinoma. The male-to-female ratio
was 4:1. Incidence in our region was 0.7 cases per 100,000
people. OS was 55% at 5 years and 35% at 10 years. DSSspecific survival was 63% and 51% at 5 and 10 years, respectively. Survival according to sex or age (younger than 65 vs
older than 65) was similar. Patients with lymphoepithelioma
histologic type survived longer than patients with squamous
cell carcinoma, although differences were not statistically significant. Survival according to stage (at 5 and 10 years) was
82%/68% at stage I, 70%/54% at stage II, 72%/65% at stage
III, and 52%/34% at stage IV.
Conclusions: NPC carcinoma in northern Spain is an uncommon neoplasm and is much more frequent in men. Most cases
had a histological type of lymphoepithelioma. OS and DSS
were similar to those in other developed countries.
Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma of the Head and
Neck Presenting With Distinct Morphologic
and Behavioral Characteristics

Objectives: Extranodal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma arising in
the infratemporal fossa is a rare entity. We present a case in
which a primary skull-base B-cell lymphoma with palatal
extension and nodal metastases developed morphology and
behavioral patterns consistent with the region from which
each component evolved.
Methods: We present a case report.
