Methods: Following institutional review board approval,
patients with stable chronic moderate dysphonia were
recruited. They completed the VHI-10 during an office visit.
Participants were then contacted via email to complete a series
of VHI-10 surveys over a 12-week period and asked to indicate whether the survey is being completed at home, at work,
or in a social setting. Patients also reported the degree to which
their voice was bothersome at each time point. Responses
between situations were aggregated and 1-way analysis of
variance was conducted to assess the difference in means.
Results: Thirty-nine patients completed an office VHI-10
and at least 1 ambulatory VHI-10. Average VHI scores were
highest in the clinical office (14.7) and at work (14.9), and
lowest in social (10.6) settings. These differences were not
statistically (P = .1) or clinically significant. There was a linear trend between the VHI score and the degree to which the
voice was bothersome to the patient.
Conclusions: VHI-10 scores collected in a variety of settings
provide composite scores that do not differ clinically or statistically from those collected in the laryngology office.

125 Hz Testing of Cochlear Implant

Objectives: It is theorized that cochlear implant (CI) patients
with postoperative unaided thresholds at 125 Hz ≤80-dB hearing level may benefit from electroacoustic stimulation. The
aim of this study is to (1) determine the rate of preserving
125 Hz thresholds following surgery and (2) to compare
speech perception outcomes in adult patients with and without
postoperative measurable thresholds at 125 Hz.
Methods: A retrospective chart review of patients who
underwent CI surgery in 2019 and had pre- and postoperative
unaided thresholds measured at 125 Hz. Hearing preservation
(HP) was defined as a postoperative unaided threshold of
≤80 dB at 125 Hz. Postoperative speech perception scores
were compared between patients with and without HP.
Results: Twelve patients underwent CI and had pre- and
postoperative unaided thresholds measured at 125 Hz. The
median preoperative unaided threshold at 125 Hz in the
implanted ear was 55 dB (range, 35-85 dB), compared with
the median postoperative threshold of 77.5 dB (range,
55-100 dB). Postoperatively, 75% (9/12) maintained unaided
thresholds at 125 Hz ≤80 dB. Currently, only 58.3% of patients
have recorded postoperative speech perception scores, only 2
of whom have HP. The median AzBio sentence testing in quiet
for the CI-only ear is 36% for patients with HP and 46% for
patients without HP. Spearman's rank-order correlation was
run to compare speech perception testing with postoperative
unaided thresholds at 125 Hz, which was not statistically significant, r = 0.342, P = .452.

Conclusions: A large percentage of CI patients maintain
thresholds ≤80 dB at 125 Hz following surgery. Preliminary
data demonstrate there is no difference in speech perception
scores between those patients with unaided thresholds above
and below 80 dB at 125 Hz.
Adaptation and Validation of the Chronic
Otitis Media Questionnaire 12 (COMQ-12)
in the Mexican Spanish Language (COMQ12-Mx)

Objectives: Chronic Otitis Media Questionnaire 12 (COMQ12) is a specific-disease tool that evaluates the severity of symptoms in chronic otitis media (COM) patients; unfortunately,
there is no translation to Spanish. The purpose of this study is to
validate the COMQ-12 into the Mexican Spanish language.
Methods: We included Mexican Spanish-speaking patients:
healthy volunteers and COM patients who attended the department of otorhinolaryngology and head and neck surgery of a
secondary care center from May 2019 to October 2019. The
COMQ-12 in Spanish was obtained by translation and back
translation from a native English-speaking person. Participants
were asked to fill out the COMQ-12 in its Mexican Spanish
version (COMQ-12-Mx). COM patients were included regardless of their COM status. The control group filled out the
questionnaire twice. The participants were categorized into
3 groups: group 1, patients with COM; group 2, volunteers
(first test); group 3, volunteers (retest). Cronbach a was used
for internal consistency and Spearman rank correlation coefficient was used to measure the test-retest reliability. MannWhitney U test was used to compare groups as independent.
Results: Seventy-eight Mexican Spanish-speaking participants (37 with COM and 41 healthy volunteers), 51 women
and 27 men, were included. Average age was 39.67 years (SD
+ 18.32). Group 1 COMQ-12-Mx score was 22.108 + 11.79,
group 2 was 3.561 + 4.399, and group 3 was 3.683 + 4.435.
Mann-Whitney U test among group 1 and control group 2 was
significant (P < .001). Cronbach a was .828 for the COM
group. Test-retest reliability was 0.928.
Conclusions: COMQ-12-Mx is a valid and reliable tool to
evaluate quality of life in Mexican Spanish-speaking patients
with COM.

There are studies that determine the association between conductive hearing loss and allergic rhinitis. The objective was to
estimate the relationship between allergic rhinitis and conductive hearing loss.
