Technical Considerations to Decrease
Burnout in Microvascular Surgery

Session Description: This session will discuss the definition
of professional burnout and methods the microvascular
reconstructive surgeon can use to decrease burnout rates that
have been inherent to the field. In particular, high complication rates and take-backs to the operating room cause significant stresses. This session will aim to discuss microvascular
techniques and principles to increase success rates to well
above 95%, including technical considerations, operating
room functionality, and adjunctive tools. Ultimately, with
improved success, the microvascular surgeon may enjoy a
greater surgical longevity and balanced lifestyle. This is
important to ensure the success of microvascular surgery
within our specialty. This presentation aims to demonstrate
methods that may improve physician wellness for the microvascular surgeon.
Outcome Objectives: (1) Define the negative effects of professional burnout. (2) Evaluate the challenges facing microvascular surgery and methods that may improve physician
wellness. (3) Develop algorithmic methods to decrease burnout and increase microvascular success.
Tips and Tricks in Operative Facial Trauma
Management: Avoiding Complications and
Achieving Better Outcomes

Session Description: The management of facial trauma has
implications in esthetic as well as functional outcomes for the
patient. Complications can result in debility that can have an
impact on a patient's vision, rhinologic function, eating, and
social engagement. Using a case-based format, presenters will
discuss tips and tricks in managing facial trauma issues. We
will discuss innovative and/or new concepts that will challenge you to think "outside the box." Presenters are experienced faculty that have treated a large volume of facial
injuries. Concepts that will be explored include alternative
approaches to frontal sinus management, when and how to
consider subcondylar fracture fixation, precision orbital fracture approaches, and treating acute and semiacute facial nerve
injuries with direct and adjunctive techniques. Panelists will

highlight the evidence and their preferred treatment philosophies, decision trees, and methods.
Outcome Objectives: (1) Review traumatic craniofacial
injuries and how to implement appropriate surgical fixation
strategies. (2) Recognize potentials for complications, and
plan avoidance strategies. (3) Use innovative approaches,
endoscopes, imaging, and adjunctive procedures to enhance
outcomes.

Head and Neck Surgery
Complex Skin Reconstruction in the
Head and Neck

Session Description: Skin reconstruction in the head and neck
is becoming increasingly challenging. Most challenging skin
defects are the result of treatment for high-risk skin cancers.
Given the rising incidence of high-risk skin cancers in the head
and neck, it is important for otolaryngologists to be familiar
with reconstruction of these defects. High-risk skin cancers
include large and infiltrating tumors as well as biologically
high-risk tumors in areas critical for appearance and function.
Many tumors are managed with a combination of surgery and
adjuvant radiation. Surgical defects as well as radiation
changes/complications create challenging defects in the head
and neck. Different areas of the head and neck have their own
unique challenges ranging from bone and dura exposure to
periocular location to vessel exposure. Many of these tumors
and defects occur in patients with significant comorbidities
including advanced age and immunocompromised patients.
These challenges need to be met by informed reconstructive
surgeons who have a broad skill set to meet these challenges.
This session aims to help build the fund of knowledge and
introduce guiding principles as well as surgical techniques to
help meet this challenge both in the community and academic
setting.
Outcome Objectives: (1) Establish basic principles to guide
skin reconstruction in the head and neck. (2) Describe a practical approach to complex skin reconstruction problems that
can be applied in community and academic settings. (3)
Introduce new techniques and materials that can be used for
complex skin reconstruction.
Controversies in Parotid Surgery: Is There
Evidence? Part I

Session Description: This session addresses controversial,
but commonly encountered, issues in the management of
benign and malignant parotid disease. We will review the data
regarding (1) capsular dissection for pleomorphic adenoma
and other benign salivary tumors, (2) superficial vs total
parotidectomy both for primary malignancy and cutaneous

transfer works best for a variety of common facial, nasal,
scalp, midface, and oral cavity defects.
Outcome Objectives: (1) Demonstrate the most effective
reconstructive techniques for common skin cancer defects of
the face or scalp. (2) Compare and contrast the variety of local
and regional flap options for common head and neck cancer
and trauma defects. (3) Recognize when free tissue transfer, or
tertiary care, is necessary when reconstructing common head
and neck cancer defects.
