Management Options for Pediatric Patients
With Single-Sided Deafness

Session Description: Treatment of single-sided deafness (SSD)
in children without delay may protect from the development
compromised spatial hearing. Without access to binaural cues,
children with SSD do not develop sound localization.
Listening in noise becomes more difficult, and social interactions and routine activities such as crossing a street can be
negatively affected. Newly available implantable technology
(including cochlear implantation for pediatric SSD and novel
bone conduction devices) has further complicated the myriad options available for treatment of pediatric SSD.
Unilateral hearing loss is known to affect educational
achievement, spatial hearing, and speech understanding in
noise. SSD is often trivialized, and frequently patients and
their families get inconsistent clinical recommendations.
Often, this reflects the lack of clear best practice guidance in
pediatric patients with SSD. Our panel will review the available technology and outcomes data and guide practitioners
in creating a child-specific management. We hope to create
insight in the audience to enable a more methodical approach
to children with SSD.
Outcome Objectives: (1) Discuss the potential impact of
pediatric SSD, including educational achievement, spatial
hearing, and speech. (2) Recognize the current technology
available, including bone conduction devices, contralateral
routing of signal hearing aids, and cochlear implantation. (3)
Implement a systemic method for monitoring and managing
pediatric patients with SSD.
Pediatric Tracheostomy Disasters:
Management Through Quality Improvement

Session Description: This will be a case-based discussion of
index emergencies/complications leading to a change in practice or an institutional protocol. The goal is to educate one
another in a format most similar to a quality-improvement
conference. Cases will cover a broad spectrum of challenges
related to pediatric tracheostomy such as early decannulation,
manufacturing plant shutdowns, wound care issues, parent
training and discharge planning, institutional education

programs, and decannulation protocols. Innovative approaches
to the clinical care of special patient populations will also be
addressed such as 3-dimensional-printed custom tracheostomy tubes and new types of tracheostomy tubes. Information
about the American College of Surgeons National Surgical
Quality Improvement Program and the Children's Surgery
Verification Program will be discussed as they relate to pediatric tracheostomy.
Outcome Objectives: (1) Describe innovative ways to track
and analyze pediatric tracheostomy safety and compare outcomes to national databases. (2) Implement institutional protocols addressing common concerns such as wound care,
safety training, and decannulation. (3) Compare recent literature on pediatric tracheostomy quality and determine what is
most applicable to your patients.

3D Sinus and Skull Base Anatomy: A CaseBased Presentation

Session Description: A comprehensive understanding of
sinus and skull base anatomy is fundamental and crucial to
performing good and safe endoscopic surgery. This complex
anatomy is often poorly taught in residency and difficult to
conceptualize from diagrammatic 2-dimensional representations. Anatomy taught through the lens of an endoscope is
vital to the modern-day sinus and skull base surgeon. Through
the use of advanced 3-dimensional (3D) endoscopic photography of perfectly prepared anatomical dissections, candidates will be able to visualize the anatomy in 3D and be
taught the important anatomical structures and relationships
pertaining to the sinus and skull base. These anatomical dissections and lectures are then correlated to surgical anatomy
and techniques for a thorough and safe understanding of how
to perform common endoscopic surgical procedures. The
learning objectives are as follows: identify the 3D anatomy of
the paranasal sinuses and relevant neighboring anatomy,
identify the 3D anatomy of the anterior skull base and surrounding regions, and perform surgery in these sinuses and
anterior skull base.
Outcome Objectives: (1) Identify the 3D anatomy of the
paranasal sinuses and relevant neighboring anatomy. (2)
Identify the 3D anatomy of the anterior skull base and surrounding regions. (3) Implement safe surgical planning when
performing surgery in these sinuses and anterior skull base.
Allergy: It's Not Just the Nose!

Session Description: This session will provide up-to-date and
evidence-based information regarding the effect of allergy on
the ear, oral cavity, paranasal sinuses, pharynx, and larynx.
