Awards
George Lubin Memorial Award
George Lubin, an originator of reinforced plastics and pioneer in the development
and implementation of advanced composites for primary structures had a long and
distinguished career. George was quick to realize the importance of SAMPE in the mid1960's and founded the SAMPE New York Chapter. Through his efforts and worldwide
recognition, he led early international meetings including the first US-USSR nonmetallics fair for which he was awarded a service medal by the then U.S. President Nixon.
As a long time SAMPE Fellow he led early composite development at the New York Applied
Science Labs, Basson Industries, and had a long and distinguished career at Grumman
Aerospace Corporation from which he retired as Chief Scientist.
Upon his death, the SAMPE organization was quick to recognize his over 50 years of composites
development work by establishing the George Lubin Award. This award is given to recognize
others who have made significant contributions in the field of material and process engineering. The George
Lubin Award allows us to remember the man and helps us to initiate his strong desire to teach, lead, and reward
advancements in both technology and world friendship.
The award will be presented during the SAMPE Fellows Ceremony held on Monday September 26 at the Anaheim
Marriott Hotel, Anaheim, California.
Dr. John Tracy has helped realize the promise of composite materials for aerospace applications through his technological
contributions, his promotion of advanced materials technology, and his technical and executive level leadership for the past
35 years. His roots are in composite materials, having started his aerospace career as an engineer at McDonnell Douglas.
One of his early achievements was the development and implementation of analytical and experimental techniques related to
the failure of advanced composite structures subjected to hostile environments, the influence of defects on laminate behavior,
and joining methods for composites.
Dr. Tracy has since attained the highest technical position within the world's largest aerospace company and top U.S
exporter, Boeing. Since 2006 he has held the position of Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President of the
company's Engineering, Operations & Technology organization.

to advance the field and develop the next generation of engineers who will lead composite materials and technologies into
our next century.
