JOURNAL ASPECTS: The March-April issue focuses upon a key technology area involving " recycling " and various applications utilizing composite materials
back into a " circular economy " with respect to sustainability. The lead article, and the cover photo as well, were provided by ELG Carbon Fibre in the
UK. ELG has developed a nice product line recovering carbon fibres into a reusable " mat format " that is then supplied on large rolls to the composites
industry. The article by ELG focuses on the development of a railway industry structure used in " rolling stock " and known as a Bogie. The author, also will
be providing a Webinar for SAMPE after this issue is published. Fatigue in many structures can be an issue in defining " life cycle " composite structures, so
the second article by researchers from Oxford Brookes University in the UK have provided an overview of how recycled carbon fibre respond to fatigue. As
you can see, the third article, also from the UK (SAMPE Europe has been quite prolific), cover composites processing via double diaphragm compression
moulding with thermosets. Although, not a recycling article, the process developed by the University of Sheffield is certainly applicable to using recycled
dry fibre systems. The Dutch, at TNO-Brightlands Materials Center, shifts focus to thermoplastic fiber composites in discussing thermo-mechanical
recycling technologies associated with developing continuous fiber systems into " long fiber thermoplastics " (LFTs). The last article, by a team from the
Fraunhofer-Institute of Chemical Technology ICT and Saxon Textile Research Institute, investigated two process options for reuse of carbon fiber waste
materials. They developed and compared a high pressure resin transfer molding (HP-RTM) and a wet compression molding (WCM) process in their article.
