prepreg in a multi-step process including solvolysis
conducted by our partner Vartega and a cleaning
step using pyrolysis under an inert environment to
allow good dispersion of the resulting fiber material
in our TuFF process. The fibers were aligned, a ~50%
FVF composite coupon fabricated, and tensile
properties measured. 100% modulus translation
(18.8 msi @ 48% FVF) compared to continuous
carbon fiber prepreg was demonstrated. Strength
retention was lower (184 ksi) but exceeds reported
recycled, short fiber composites by a factor of 3x.
Future work will optimize the process to improve
tensile strength for full property translation
looking at fiber-resin adhesion, fiber strength and
alignment quality. The approach has the potential
to reduce environmental impact (Green House
Gases, embodied energy) of composite structures.
The opportunity to integrate lower cost recycled
short CFs to produce a low-cost, energy-efficient
but
high-performance composite material
structural applications is significant.
