Q&A Where did you go to school? After graduating from Portland High School, I went to the University of Iowa where I graduated with a BS in Botany and a minor in Chemistry. I did some postgraduate studies in Polymer Chemistry at the University of Southern Maine. Where do you work? Please share with us how you're using composites in your current (or recent) work project. I work at Gardner Business Media for the Compositesworld magazine brand as Director of Strategic Initiatives and Conferences. I have organized and directed many conferences on highperformance fiber-reinforced composites and resins since 2007. The best-known conference is Carbon Fiber. What first got you started with SAMPE? I worked at FMI in Biddeford, Maine making carbon-carbon rocket nozzles and nosetips in the 1980s, and heard about SAMPE then. I joined the Boston Chapter in 1998 to learn and network. I've always been interested in advanced materials and composites, particularly CFRPs. 8 | SAMPE JOURNAL | SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2022 MEMBER NEWS | LEADERSHIP Chris Locke Director of Marketing, Membership and Education christine@sampe.org Scott Stephenson scott@compositesworld.com Scott Stephenson is Director of Strategic Initiatives & Events at CompositesWorld and is SAMPE North America's newly elected President. He has been an active member of the SAMPE community since 1998. What made you first want to volunteer at SAMPE? Since I enjoyed attending the Boston Chapter Meetings and seeing the presentations and networking and I organized my own technical conferences, I was asked to help find speakers for these local meetings. Share your favorite SAMPE story or memory. I worked with Chuck Segal and Kenji Iizuka on the Carbon Fiber conference for many years. We had many fine dinners over the years all over North America and Europe. My favorite memory is seeing Kenji-san's widow and daughter accept his posthumous Fellow Award. What takeaways have you learned from your volunteer experiences? I have particularly enjoyed working with students and young professionals. Their enthusiasm and thirst for knowledge inspire me. They are the future of the Society and we must continue to encourage them and help them in any way we can. www. sampe.orghttp://www.sampe.org
