Journal Aspects: " Tooling Technology Advancement & Applications " was the main manufacturing and materials focus areas covered in this issue. Coastal
Enterprises provided the photo on the cover which displays typical Precision Board machined from high-density urethane tooling board as a master start
for critical tooling applications. The lead article, by the University of Washington focused on the problem(s) associated with changing tooling surfaces over
time during multiple manufacturing runs. Machine learning and " sparge " multiple location assessments were used to evaluate effects on such surfaces.
Massivit3D (Israel) presented the results of their work in developing " direct print thermoset molds " which could then be used for a variety of composite
tooling mold sets. Their " Cast-In-Motion " process demonstrated several advantages with numerous examples of complexity. Additive bridge tooling
developed for injection molding high performance material structures were by CompriseTec GmbH Company (Germany) with the focus on non-metallic
inject molds made more rapidly for small parts. During processing of carbon reinforced prepregs to construct composites, both interface " interply friction "
and " tooling ply frictions " occur both within the material as well as adjacent to the tool surface. Novel experimental methods were used to assess these
characteristics from a group at Montana State University. The final article, submitted by the Colorado State University team looked at further development
of continuous fiber, grid-stiffened thermoplastic tooling stiffeners as a means of reducing various tooling aspects. The SAMPE Leadership article for this
issue, introduces SAMPE China's Prof. Xiaosu Yi, SAMPE Fellow, and Global Past President. Prof. Yi as most of us are aware, expanded the growth of SAMPE
China into the most rapid growth regional chapter in recent years with very large conference/exhibition events held in several Chinese cities.
