INTRODUCTION
Fiber-reinforced plastics or composites have
widespread uses as structural materials in major
industries, such as aerospace, automotive, marine,
wind-turbines, consumer sports, biomedical
prosthetics, and building construction.
This
is because of their high strength-to-weight
and high modulus-to-weight
ratios. The basic
manufacturing of composite components involves
capital investment and technical complexity and
is relatively labor-intensive. This is also the case
in the production of molds, which are used to
form the final shape of the fabricated composite
components. On the one hand, these molds need
to support the production of high-quality and
durable complex-shaped composite components
while on the other hand they need to be costeffective
and to be ready in a short lead-time1
. This
introduces Massivit 3D's Cast-In-Motion
technology (CIM), that allows direct printing of
thermoset molds, that have the potential to save
costs and shorten lead times of mold production.

Cast-In-Motion Technology
Cast-In-Motion technology uses a designated
printing system (see Figure 1), for rapid direct
digital printing of tools and molds.
This technology utilizes a proprietary UV-cured
Water Breakable (WB) material, Dimengel, that is
used for printing a double-wall shell (see Figure 2a),
while a calculated amount of a proprietary epoxy,
CIM 500, is cast (see Figure 2b) intermittently,
in order to create a near net-shape epoxy mold
encapsulated by a WB shell.

Uses of Cast-In-Motion Technology
The use of CIM technology can be divided into
three general areas:
1. Production tooling for composite components
such as:
* Open molds such as layup/ lamination molds
(Figure 4a)
* Closed molds such as compression molds
(Figure 4b)
* Soluble washed-away mandrels (Figure 4c)
* Supplementary tooling for the production
of composite components, such as masters,
patterns, holding fixtures, location jigs,
trimming tools and assembly tools

After the encapsulated mold is post-cured, it is
soaked in a water bath and / or machined for the
WB shell removal, in order to obtain the desired
mold geometry, which is then ready for use (see
Figure 3).
