CONCLUSION
The development of ceramic matrix composites,
in particular around silicon carbide-based
compositions, is a critical advancement in next
generation material systems for use in demanding
high tech applications. The implementation of SiC
fibers produced by LCVD is an important step to
achieve high performance in a ceramic composite
due to the high purity nature. Demonstration of
the technical and economic value of such SiC
fibers in a non-woven veil format are ongoing,
with promising directional
results from initial
composite fabrication efforts. Similarly, a novel
but straightforward approach to homogenous
joining of ceramics and composites based on LCVD
materials in non-woven form and a CVD-based
process has yielded high density, durably welded
tube components, with quantitative mechanical
strength evaluation of the weld planned. Both
deliver innovation in materials and design that
enable the broadening reach of CMC application.
