The overall theme is even more noticeable as
one looks through the technical presentations
(technical papers, panels, tutorials, exhibitor training
and demonstrations, and speakers). The themes,
in general, addressed problems that materials and
processing engineers were encountering while at
the same time suggesting potential solutions and/
or ultimate resolutions. SAMPE was the organization
that offered solutions to problems existing in those
areas. As a result, while many had not heard much
regarding TRL (Technology Readiness Levels) or MRL
(Manufacturing Readiness Levels), the presentations
generally focused on higher levels. TRL and MRL
within the 1-3 range were " exciting " and " of interest, "
the primary focus was on finding solutions to existing
problems from experts presenting, attending, and
discussing topic-organized events such as SAMPE's
2004 60th
Anniversary.
The bottom line is that we need good coverage
of TRL and MRL that provides insight into new
technology. We must stay ahead on emerging
technologies and research in areas where the TRL/
MRL values are already low. But we must stay ahead
of the wave with solutions to address materials
advancement and process engineering issues
as they arise. This point reminds me of
when I
looked at the SAMPE Japan JISSE-11 tutorial I gave
in 2009 when I covered " various energy markets, "
which were starting to emerge and looking for
solutions to problems. Such topics as biomass,
helium-3, hydrogen, wind, ocean/tidal energy, fuel
transportation, etc. were on the list then. Many areas
within these topics seek solutions to problems where
mid- to higher TRL/MRL are essential. The bottom
line is that SAMPE has been, and will remain, best
known for providing solutions to current problems.

infusion " technology, filament wound COPVs, amusement rides
(NASA Space Camp), underground petrol tanks (Petronas), Arctic
drill systems (solid methane), and pressure vessels for the US Navy/
Air Force/Army and NASA (Filament Wound Case-FWC Program).
He has over 500 publications.
