All veil and felt forms of quartz non-woven
substrates have a chemical binder that hold the
fibers together and maintain the sheet shape of
the substrate. Quartz wool however does not have
any chemical binder. This makes it even more pure
which is why one of its main uses is in the analytical
instrumentation market.
RESULTS & DISCUSSIONS
All applications that utilize quartz fiber in any of its
many forms does so because multiple design and
performance requirements calling for the specific
balance of properties that can only be obtained
from quartz. The special balance of properties
all result from the purity of the silica and its form
of a fine filament that is thermally resistant, high
strength, with high electromagnetic transparency
all while being flexible enough to be efficiently
processed
through many value add steps
in
the supply chain to ultimately create complex
advanced composite parts. In Figure 17 are the base
purity and physical, mechanical, electrical, and
thermal properties of fused quartz silica. In Figure
18, mechanical, density, and dielectric properties
and E-glass, S-glass, and quartz are compared.
SUMMARY & CONCLUSIONS, FUTURE WORK
The current quartz fibers available today and
for decades prior have found use in some of
our industries most demanding and critical
applications. The quartz fiber industry along
with the entire composites supply chain that use
quartz fibers through end use OEM manufacturers
continue to improve process efficiencies, quality
systems including FOD prevention, and develop
new methods to maximize the resulting properties
when
quartz
reinforcement
substrates
and
advanced resin systems are combined. General
areas of development at the quartz fiber level of the
industry could include increasing the range of low
TEX and high TEX yarns. This would allow Textile
substrate capability to expand in both directions
of lighter and thinner fabrics and heavier and
stronger fabrics. Other areas of future work could
include yarn binders with different functionality
for resins and matrixes beyond common thermoset
polymer systems.
