est wishes for an outstanding 2024 SAMPE Conference! I hope you can partake of the
many activities offered at the conference: the keynote address, technical talks, featured
panels, student bridge contest, tutorials, and the exhibition hall as well as networking and
fellowship with all of our SAMPE member colleagues and friends.
This issue comprises four articles devoted to aspects of Cellular Materials and Composites. The
first article, from Texas State University, focuses on additive manufacturing of magnetic composites
where a filament is manufactured with magnetic particle reinforcement, and then structures can
be additively manufactured with the filament to have a magnetically cellular material. The second
article, from a team composed of the University of Dayton Research Institute, Air Force Research
Laboratory, and the University of Tennessee-Oak Ridge Innovation Institute, examines how to
introduce vascular structures to enhance the cooling and electromagnetic capabilities of composite
radomes. The third article, from Purdue University, examines how additively manufactured cellular
structures can be designed and fabricated to enable such technology as a spanwise morphing
wing. The final paper, a collaboration between Microsphere Material Solutions and the University
of Maryland, focuses on using hollow glass microspheres to make glass foam, and how to tailor
the stress vs. strain profile using dry powder printing to control density in the powder compact
and sintering to consolidate the material.
SAMPE Journal Cover Competition
We are in the second month of our SAMPE Journal cover competition, and
the response has been excellent. SAMPE Journal encourages all student
and professional members to consider submitting a high resolution image
(ideally 350 dpi or greater) in portrait format. Also, if you submit an article
to SAMPE Journal, please also submit a potential cover image that can
be used as the cover for the issue. The only stipulation is that the image
must be a picture or image owned by the individual submitting that is from
their own work or research and is of interest to advancements in material
process engineering. Both the cover of the March-April issue, and the
cover of this May-June issue, were images submitted by graduate students that were related
to their research. At the end of the year, we will ask a panel of judges to pick the SAMPE
Journal Cover of the Year from author and/or member submitted images used as covers.
