UC Davis Names Mark Stetter
New Dean

and animal health teams at Walt Disney World and was
responsible for more than 500 employees and multiple
animal collections, including Disney's Animal Kingdom
Theme Park, The Living Seas at EPCOT, Tri-Circle D
Ranch, and the Animal Kingdom Lodge.
" My experiences at Colorado State and Disney World
provided me with an excellent foundation for the role
of dean at UC Davis, " Stetter said. " But in complementary
ways, each gave me a uniquely valuable opportunity
to care for animals, grow my veterinary expertise, and
learn how to lead large and complex organizations. "
As dean at UC Davis, Stetter will have responsibility
not only for education and research at the school,
but also for strategic planning, management and administration,
external affairs, and outreach and development,
among other core functions.

forward to working across the school, campus, and
larger community to enhance our mission and impact, "
said Stetter. " The ability to work with so many dedicated
and distinguished colleagues and students really

he UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine
named Mark Stetter, DVM, DACZM,
as the new dean, effective October 18,
2021. Stetter replaces John Pascoe, who has
served as interim dean since July 1, when
Michael Lairmore stepped down after nearly 10
years as dean.
Stetter comes to UC Davis with extensive and varied
experience, and distinguished accomplishments, both in
veterinary medicine and leadership. His areas of research
and treatment expertise are diverse within his primary
emphasis on wildlife and zoo animals.
From 2012-2021, Stetter served as dean of the College
of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at
Colorado State University. His significant contributions
there were numerous and transformative. He was instrumental
in the college raising more than $370 million for
new buildings, student scholarships, endowed positions,
and research programs, among other uses.
Prior to Colorado State, Stetter served as director of
animal operations, director of animal health, and clinical
veterinarian at Walt Disney World from 1997-2012.
He provided oversight and leadership to the animal care

in One Health also sparked Stetter's interest in serving as
the ninth dean of the veterinary school.
" One of the big draws for me has been helping
improve the health of animals, people, and the planet, "
Stetter said. " I need to work at a place whose mission
and level of excellence allows for the largest impact.
That is why I'm excited about being at UC Davis. "
Stetter sees his overall priorities and philosophy as
filling two main roles. The first is protecting and growing
the already strong UC Davis brand, as measured by
credibility, respect, and overall awareness in the public
eye. The second is creating and ensuring UC Davis as
the " workplace of choice " for faculty, staff, and students,
which includes recruiting and retaining the very best
employees and students.
Stetter earned both his BS in biochemistry and his
DVM from the University of Illinois. He interned at the
Animal Medical Center in New York City and completed
a residency in zoological medicine at The Wildlife
Conservation Society. P
