TWO 2022 OPEN SCVMA
TRUSTEE POSITIONS
We have two positions on SCVMA's Board of Trustees opening
in 2022, one in Region 1 (Los Angeles County) and one in
Region 2 (Orange County).
Dr Raymond de Villa (Region 1) has completed his term of office
and is ineligible for re-election. Dr Georgina Marquez (Region 2)
has completed her term and is ineligible to run for re-election.
To be a candidate for one of these positions, you must:
Be a voting member of the SCVMA.
Have been a voting member for three years or more.
Reside or have your place of employment in Los Angeles or
Orange counties and be affiliated with a chapter in Los Angeles
or Orange counties.
Be willing to commit to a minimum of three years serving
your community and your association.
If you are interested, you must complete an SCVMA-approved
petition by obtaining 10 signatures of SCVMA voting members
in your region that includes the signature of one member of
the current SCVMA Board of Trustees. Petitions are available by
calling 714-821-7493 or at scvmainfo@scvma.org.
You must send the original to the SCVMA at 5576 Corporate
Avenue, Cypress, CA 90630. Faxed or e-mailed submissions
will not be accepted.
Completed petitions must be received by October 1.

In Memoriam
Beloved cowboy poet Baxter Black
passed away Friday, June 10, 2022. An
acclaimed storyteller, Black wrote more
than 30 books of poetry and fiction and
sold more than 2 million books, CDs,
and DVDs.Black grew up in Las Cruces, New Mexico, and
was dedicated to agricultural life from an early age. He was
an FFA president, rode bulls, and completed veterinary
school at Colorado State University. He was a practicing
veterinarian for nearly 20 years before turning his talents
toward storytelling and becoming an author, poet, TV
and radio host, and public speaker. Black had an uncanny
way of connecting with everyone around him through his
unique brand of humor and wit. Regardless of whether
they came from an agricultural background or lived in the
middle of a city, Black's musings on rural life deeply resonated
with his audience. SCVMA had the honor of hosting
Dr. Baxter Black as a keynote speaker at the installation of
Dr. Joe Cortese. His wit and his wisdom will be missed.

HEROES AWARDS
On May 20, Dr. Jennifer Hawkins and Dr. Karla Nichols
had the honor of attending the OC Red Cross Heroes
Awards. Dr. Hawkins presented the Animal Welfare Hero
Award to Ally Carrier, founder of Animal Assistance Network,
for her tireless work and dedication to helping animals
stay out of shelters and off the streets. The SCVMA
congratulates Ally Carrier and all the OC Red Cross Hero
Award winners.
Nichols, Carrier and Hawkins
In loving memory of Dr. Clark Kelly
1/5/1934-6/15/2022 Dr. Clark Kelly was a loving husband,
father, grandfather and veterinarian. He was born in Albuquerque,
New Mexico to Mildred and Bernard Kelly. He grew up
in Fruita Colorado and in 1954 earned a Doctor of Veterinary
Medicine degree from Colorado State University. After graduation,
he entered the Air Force and served four years as a Captain.
He loved serving in the military as a veterinarian and enjoyed
sharing funny stories about his adventures. In 1965 he purchased
Boulevard Animal Clinic with his wife, Kelly and practiced there
for 57 years, right up until his passing. He helped 4 generations
of clients and their pets and loved being a veterinarian.
His dedication and love for veterinary medicine was defined
when in 1999, he wrote to the AVMA and suggested the veterinary
oath be changed to reflect the current times. He made
the observation that the oath said, " conservation of livestock
resources " and he suggested it be changed to " conservation of
all animal resources " to be more inclusive. The AVMA adopted
the change and presented the rewritten oath on the cover of the
journal in January of 2000.
Dr. Kelly was a kind and generous man who never had a bad
thing to say about anyone. His clients adored him and his legacy
of service to the city of San Diego will live on forever. Dr. Kelly
is survived by his wife, Kelly, two daughters, Karen and Kathryn,
son in law, Frank, three grandchildren and brother Monte Kelly.
