CVMA BOARD OF
GOVERNORS REPORT
At the June 2 meeting, the Board discussed and approved
changes to the CVMA's committee structure and composition.
One of the changes is to consolidate the CVMA's
Leadership Development Committee into the Ways &
Means Committee/President's Council. This will likely
require a Bylaws change which CVMA will get moving on
that in short order.
CVMA is now commencing efforts to compose the CVMA's
new Inclusion and Diversity Committee, which was greenlighted
at the March meeting. CVMA's aim is to have the
first meeting of that new committee by the end of the year.
On July 1, CVMA will be launching a new member benefit-Active
and Fit Direct-that will allow members to
obtain discounted access to a network of fitness centers
across the country. CVMA will be putting out our initial
publications about this benefit in the coming weeks.
CVMA is continuing its efforts to obtain an audience
with the Veterinary Medical Board on the subject of the
VMB's recordkeeping-related enforcement protocols. In
that regard, CVMA staff on June 2 presented the CVMA's
joint Board and House with a " dry run " of their planned
presentation to the VMB on that issue. Following that
presentation, CVMA again reached out to the VMB concerning
hopes to give this presentation to the VMB itself.
(Note that the presentation was previously agendized
at the VMB's April 20 meeting, but then pulled the
week prior due to concerns expressed by the VMB's staff
regarding the substance of the presentation.)
The Board and House listened to Dean and student
reports from UC Davis and WesternU, as well as reports
from the AVMA's California and District X delegates,
Veterinary Medical Board staff, and CVMA staff. The
CVMA was also happy to welcome and hear comments
from the AVMA's 2021-2022 President, Dr. Jose Arce.
The joint session additionally featured a send-off for the
CVMA's longtime lobbyist, Mike Dillon, who is retiring
at the end of the 2022 legislative session. The CVMA's
interests at the Capitol will continue to be capably represented
by Christina DiCaro, who has worked hand-inhand
with Mike Dillon since the early 2000s.
The CVMA Board voted to support longtime CVMA member
Dr. Grace Bransford in her bid for 2022-2023 AVMA
President-Elect.
The CVMA Board approved changes to the bylaws of
the California Veterinary Medical Foundation, which
supports the CVMA's disaster relief efforts and funds
veterinary student scholarships. These bylaw changes
were mostly non-substantive, designed to streamline
and modernize the CVMF's governing rules.
Attendance was strong at the 2022 Pacific Veterinary
Conference in San Francisco. It was the first time that
CVMA has presented PacVet as a " hybrid " offering. Next
year's Pac Vet will be held in Long Beach.

2023 SCVMA Awards
It is never too early to think about recognizing
those who have gone above and beyond on behalf
of the veterinary profession, organized veterinary
medicine and the SCVMA.
The SCVMA recognizes award winners each year
at our annual celebration. The next celebration is
scheduled for Saturday, February 4, at the Hyatt Regency Long Beach.
Applications must be received by September 1. The Awards:
The Ginny Grant Award, named after an SCVMA matriarch, is presented
to someone who has shown ongoing support for an SCVMA member
veterinarian, or has actively participated in programs to help educate the
pet-owning public about responsible pet ownership or has actively educated
the public about the veterinary profession. The winner is chosen by the

The Phil Steinhauer Allied Industry Award is presented to someone who
has demonstrated a long term and ongoing dedication to the veterinary
profession and organized veterinary medicine. This person's actions
will have enhanced the knowledge and well-being of veterinarians in the
SCVMA. Nominees are chosen by the Allied Industry Committee. You

The Outstanding Veterinary Team Member of the Year Award will be presented
to a non-veterinarian who has contributed significantly to SCVMA,
organized veterinary medicine and the human-animal bond in Southern
California. The recipient of the award must be a member of the SCVMA
Para-Professional Chapter and be nominated by an SCVMA member. The
recipient will have demonstrated dedication to the association and organized
veterinary medicine through participation and dedication to SCVMA-related
programs and events. The nominee will have promoted animal care and the
profession by providing excellent levels of care in his or her position. Additionally,
the winner will have demonstrated efforts to improve the profession
(for example by teaching, volunteering, writing, public education, etc.).

The Cortese-Lippincott Award, named after two SCVMA legends, Joe Cortese
and Larry Lippincott, will be presented by the Animal Health Foundation to an
individual who has gone above and beyond in making the world a better place
for both humans and animals. The winner will have excelled in community
service, service and education of the veterinary community and support of the
human-animal bond.

The Don Mahan Award, the SCVMA's highest honor, is presented to an
individual who has served organized veterinary medicine in an extraordinary
manner while embracing Don Mahan's philosophy of service to the
pet-owning public. Dedication and service to the veterinary profession
and concern for the well-being of animals weigh heavily in the selection.
The winner is chosen by the SCVMA Board of Trustees. You may submit
