Report from the SCVMA
Board of Trustees Meeting
of March 29
On March 25, the CVMA Board of Governors met virtually.
At this meeting, the Chairs of the CVMA's Legislative
Committee shared its recommendations for positions on
this year's legislative bills. The CVMA Board discussed the
bills. Priority bill positions are as follows: AB 814 (animal
physical rehabilitation) Oppose; AB 1232 (CDFA higher
welfare program) Write Letter of Concern; AB 1399 (VCPR
Telemedicine) Oppose; SB 669 (VCPR, RVT Scope) Support
if Amended. The Board also chose CVMA's 2023 award
winners and heard from the 2023 candidates for AVMA
President-Elect.
AVMA District X Director Dr. Richard Sullivan reported
on the actions taken by AVMA to ensure that xylazine
remains unrestricted for veterinary use. Xylazine for use in
humans will now be considered a Schedule III controlled
substance.
The Veterinary Team Members group plans to host one
in-person CE and one virtual CE event each quarter. Check
out the SCVMA calendar for further details.
The Allied Industry group met at SCVMA HQ on March 14.
An Allied Industry newsletter will be sent out summing
up the meeting and SCVMA upcoming events. If you know
allied industry members that are not receiving information
from the Allied Industry Chairs, please have them
email Dr. Hawkins at jhawkins@scvma.org to be added
to the email list.
Leadership Training will be provided by Dr. Peter Weinstein
for up to 25 recent graduates, veterinary students, and
practice managers. Details will be coming soon.
A motion was passed by the Board for the SCVMA to sign
on to the MCVMA #wakeupvetmed initiative, as outlined in
the SCVMA DEI Action Plan.
The 2024 Celebration will be held at The Roosevelt Hotel
on February 3.
