have told me that they don't do surgery. This
would include a laceration repair, which I feel
is a basic treatment any one of our associates
should be able to perform. I respect that they
can choose which services to offer, but does
that come at the expense of being able to offer
the best patient care? "
Dr. Klemens does not offer surgery in his
relief practice.
" I made that choice because I was coming
from years of an elevated standard of care in
general practice and in ECC. I'm going to do
general anesthesia in a very specific way, and
I'm going to have a trained anesthesia tech do
it with me, " said Dr. Klemens. " So since I don't
know how you do your general anesthesia or
your surgical practice, we're just going to not
have that argument. And I'm going to generate
more revenue for you by seeing wellness and
illness appointments, not by doing your spays
and neuters. "
Dr. Lovegrove is willing to step into the surgery
role, but she's clear with practices that her
experience is limited and that she's a bit slower
than others might be.
" Communication is so important, " said Dr.
Lovegrove, who sends a templated email response
to practices interested in working with

hen Jessica Lovegrove, DVM,
came across a thread on a relief
Facebook page and someone asked about
leadership and representation among relief
veterinarians, she decided to speak up.
" Who is standing up and being a positive
voice for us? Who is helping us make
impactful changes and bringing us into
a more legitimate role within veterinary
medicine? " Dr. Lovegrove recalled the
post's author asking. " And I agreed, so I
said I had very limited experience being
on a board in school but that I could help
get something like this off the ground.
One thing led to another, and we had a
group of people dedicated to building
this. "
As the founding president of the Relief
Veterinary Medical Association
(RVMA), Dr. Lovegrove has learned that
it isn't easy, but it's worth it.

" The thing I hate the most is learning
about a colleague who has been lost to
suicide because they didn't know what
else to do. They couldn't get out. That's
something that I would love to never see
again, " said Dr. Lovegrove. " If I could give
that one person a vacation they've needed
to go and recenter themselves and maybe
not leave this world-if I could just touch
one person that way, I would feel better.
Because this profession is full of compassionate,
caring people and we're losing
them too rapidly. RVMA is my way
of trying to do something to move our
profession into a better light in a better
world. "
