impact the environment, but it also influences a
behavioral change for those who participate.
Overall, a sustainability program can be relatively
easy to start by initiating minor changes within the
residential community allowing residential students to
impact sustainability in a number of ways. Through
the cooperative actions of residential students and
housing professionals great contributions can be made
in the area of energy reduction, water conservation,
and waste management. Most importantly, the efforts
of housing and residence life departments can have a
positive effect on sustainability campus-wide and a
lasting impact on the environment.

This past summer the Office of Residence Life at
James Madison University partnered with TOMS for a
unique take on staff training. Focusing on the theme
“Start Something That Matters” (based on the book by
the same name written by TOMS founder Blake
Mycoskie) JMU RAs, Hall Directors and professional
staff were challenged to take a fresh look at their roles
as ORL staff and encouraged to explore new avenues
of programming and staff development.
Blake Mycoskie started TOMS Shoes after a 2006
trip to Argentina where he discovered many children
went without shoes to protect their feet. Wanting to

help, he created a company that would match every
pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given
to a child in need; A concept TOMS refers to as “One
for One.” The idea was an immediate success and later
in 2006 Blake returned to Argentina with 10,000 pairs
of shoes made possible by TOMS customers. Through
the end of 2012 TOMS has given over 2 million shoes
to children in need. TOMS has since expanded the
One for One concept to include sunglasses where a
person in need receives prescription eyeglasses or eye
surgery for every pair of eyewear purchased.
JMU made a connection with TOMS through an
