opportunity for growth in the areas of Assessment,
Evaluation, and Research (AER), Law, Policy, and
Governance (LPG), and Human and Organizational
Resources (HOR). Additionally, because the entry
point to the profession was not necessarily a higher
education administration background, many
colleagues were not able to articulate their knowledge
of the historical and philosophical underpinnings of
the profession.
In response, the committee has and will continue
to create developmental opportunities, focusing on
each area of opportunity every month. As a
department still in a period of transition, Virginia Tech
HRL has taken great strides in maintaining a high
standard of service to its students and academic
partners. Still, there are many lessons remaining to be
learned about serving our own department and
colleagues by ensuring that they receive the best
possible opportunities to grow professionally and
challenge themselves. As we look forward, the
committee has focused upon further developing the
curriculum model and applying it to every aspect of
the on-boarding process for our new professionals.
The goal for the next academic year is to be able to
present our newly acquired talent with a menu of
options to strengthen their current practice, as well as
build strong foundations for future careers.
As Virginia Tech continues to innovate, the
committee has no doubt that the department will rise
to the expectations presented in the NASPA/ACPA
Competencies. By building upon solid theory,
Virginia Tech will continue to hold its position as a
premier provider of educational programming within
safe, clean, affordable communities of higher
learning.

Gone are the days of taking pads of paper to
meetings, lugging around heavy laptops and looking
for a tape recorder to use in a focus group or
interview. Apple’s iPad has brought a new definition
to efficiency for the tech savvy professional. However,
simply purchasing an iPad is not enough to change the
way you approach your work. In the fast pace world of
technology, it can be difficult to keep up with every
new tip or application. Below are ten ways that you
can revolutionize your work using your iPad. And if
you do not own an iPad - this list may convince you to
buy one!

Tip # 1 - Never Say Never. The last thing you want
to happen is for your iPad to go missing; follow
these steps to make make sure you are prepared
should it ever happen.
Set up Find My iPad in case your iPad is ever
lost or stolen. This app will allow you to locate
it, display a message on it, and even remotely
wipe it if needed.
Make sure you have a passcode on your iPad,
in case someone picks it up by accident. This
is even more important as our work involves
lots of sensitive information.
