STUDENT AFFAIRS AROUND THE REGION Alabama Updates Jacksonville State University Jacksonville State University wrapped up a wonderful fall semester and is excited about the spring semester! RA Training kicked off the fall semester with the theme of “Lights, Camera, Action! Make Yourself a Star!” Headlining our RA Training as speakers, Harlan Cohen, author of The Naked Roommate and James Robilotta, from CAMPUSPEAK, brought new ideas about living on campus and authentic leadership. Move-in weekend welcomed our residents with our third Cocky Daze (welcome weekend). Residents enjoyed a weekend full of events, from a hypnotist, fun run/walk, to a full carnival, and movie night on the Quad where The Hunger Games were shown. We also experienced our first move in with CBORD and ResCenter, helping us go paperless with our check-in process. Successful fall programs included partnering with the Office of Student Life to bring Doc Hendley, author of Wine to Water, to campus. Wine to Water was chosen as the summer reading program selection for this year. Speaker, Harlan Cohen, visited campus for the second time this year in October to present his latest book, Getting Naked. One Night Without a Home was held in November raising awareness for the National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week (November 12-16) and for December, we made a final exams prep package for each resident. The Department of University Housing and Residence Life is hosting several events for the spring semester. In January, Brain Cell, a text messaging trivia game show will be offered to students with opportunities to win cash prizes for participating. In March, as a part of the annual Safe Spring Break week, the Arrive Alive Tour will visit campus to raise awareness of the dangers of distracted driving. The tour will give students the chance to participate simulators that present texting while driving and drinking while driving scenarios. Students will also have the opportunity to sign a pledge against texting while driving and drinking while driving. We are also partnering with the Peer Educators to bring David Coleman, the Dating Doctor, to campus for February. Fall RA Recruitment is in full swing and our fall staff will be chosen by the end of February. Housing reapplication will occur online with CBORD during SEAHO Report Winter 2013 the month of February as well. We are also seeking a few good grads! If anyone is interested in being an Assistant Residence Life Coordinator (graduate assistant), please contact Wesley Todd at wtodd@jsu.edu. We look forward to seeing our friends and colleagues at SEAHO in Atlanta! We hope everyone has a great semester! University of Montevallo The University of Montevallo would like to announce Sally Dollar has been appointed the new Assistant Director of Housing and Residence Life. Sally is a graduate of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and completed her Master of Arts in Counseling at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Sally has worked in Housing & Residence Life for over seven years, previously at the University of Tennessee and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Sally would like to share that “working at the University of Montevallo ROCKS and John Denson is the best boss ever! GO FALCONS!” University of North Alabama The Department of Housing at the University of North Alabama has had several personnel changes lately, with the promotion of Jimmy Waddell to Assistant Director of Housing and Leah O. Harper serving as the Administrative Assistant for University Apartments. Troy University For the fall semester 2013 Troy University will open a new faith-based housing concept called The Newman Center. The $11.8 million residence hall is expected to be completed in August 2013. The Newman Center will provide 376 beds and will be a co-ed facility.
