SEAHO FAFFAIRS AROUND THE REGION STUDENT EATURE elected Mr. Mike West from UT-Knoxville was elected as President and Ms. Jennifer Wilson from UT-Knoxville was elected as the state secretary/treasurer. TARH 2013 TARH 2013 was a great success! Our theme this year was TARHmageddon: Soon you will find that being a leader is not the end of the world! Over 100 delegates and advisors attended this year’s conference! We were very excited to have 11 institutions in attendance: Belmont, UT - Knoxville, UT - Martin, UT - Chattanooga, Tennessee Tech, East Tennessee State, Maryville, Memphis, Lincoln Memorial, Austin Peay State, and Middle Tennessee State. Delegates and advisors enjoyed a spirited and encouraging speech from Ms. Amy Gallimore from TRI Leadership Resources. Several awards were voted upon and awarded at the conference. NCC of the Year went to Matthew Holt and Advisor went to Amy Beals—both from ETSU. School of the Year went to the University of Tennessee at Martin. Katie Garren from ETSU won Student of the Year. Three awards were given to students with 4 years of service to TARH – Zack Walden, Brandy Greene, and Katie Garren from ETSU. New executive board members were elected and will be sworn in at No-Frills. Positions were awarded to Jana Vestal-UTM (Director), Jacob Howard-ETSU (AD-Administration and Finance), Jeanne Moore-UTK (AD-Publications), Emily Hallman-APSU (State Communications Coordinator), Lindee McCurley-UTM (Advisor) and Ryan Martin-UTM (Associate Advisor). We are still accepting bids to host TARH 2014! Bids will be voted on at No-Frills and the host institution will be announced shortly after! Virginia Updates Old Dominion University Old Dominion University Housing & Residence Life welcomes Mike Lawson! Mike is the new Residence Hall Director of Rogers Complex. Mike graduated from Long Island University with an MBA and a B.S. in Accounting. Mike previously worked as a Residence Hall Director at Stony Brook University. Mike has particular interests in diversity education; HIV/AIDS risk reduction; and health and wellness. Mike is also an ACSM Certified Personal Trainer and enjoys playing guitar and surfing. (the Lawn & Range). Students have been able to safely use their fire places during this cold winter season. Also, construction continues to finish three new First Year residence halls that will be open for the fall semester. This coming summer we’ll take another building down for additional new construction. Our department also now includes Off-Grounds housing support to students. We’re currently partnering with Brailsford & Dunlavey to help us assess housing demand and to plan ahead for potential projects. Virginia Commonwealth University University of Virginia We have a number of new staff on Grounds this academic year – new Assistant Dean for First Year Areas, Andy Petters and three new Area Coordinators, Venus Miller, Katie Travieso, and Cody Ward. On the facilities front, a major project was completed this past summer to upgrade the fire safety & sprinkler system in our historic Academica Village 42 It has been a season of change in VCU Residential Life and Housing! This fall, we completed our transition from Graduate Resident Directors to fulltime, professional Hall Directors. In doing so, we welcomed seven talented individuals to our team: Adrienne Thompson of Indiana University, Kevin Baker of Texas State University San Marcos, Sandrine Heeren of University of South Carolina, Sarah McClure of Bowling Green State University, BaShaun Smith of University of Dayton, Cathie Anthony of Virginia Commonwealth University, and Samantha Mills of Virginia Tech.
