the class. In my second year, I was working as a graduate student Asst. Director of the Writing program helping
others learn how to teach effectively. So, before I earned my MA, I knew I wanted to teach in a way that
empowered students and to help other instructors maximize their classroom experience.
Q: What are your research interests? What is something that you would like to research but haven't yet?
I am interested in Harlem Renaissance playwrights as a researcher. I have been thinking about how we
can more effectively engage first year students recently and may begin to explore some of the material that
is available. I also hope that in the future I will do research that engages Black artistic communities in
Mississippi. I am not sure what that will look like right now. But there are a lot of positive things happening in
Mississippi that are overlooked in our national conversations.
Q: You are a known leader in your field. What advice do you have for SEAHO members in regards to their
career journey?
The best advice I can give is to say that you should follow your passion and not the trends. To be more succinct,
"just do what you do." I have had peers at each step of my journey who chose to pursue certain routes because
they were trendy or hot, but they were not passionate about their pursuits. I have always followed my passion,
even when it appeared unwise to other people. Doors have always opened. But, I felt like even if doors did not
open, I would still be happy because I pursued the area that gave me personal peace and fulfillment. If you do
what you do well, you are empowered to help others do what they do effectively.
Q: What do you think is a current hot topic in Student Affairs that people need to know about? What is your
opinion on that topic?
This question makes me laugh because I had not read it when I answered the first. I don't keep up with hot
topics. I try to meet the needs of the students I meet using the resources at the university where I served.
Whether what they need, or how they need it, is "hot or not" we have to do what we do and make things
happened for that student.
Q: What excites you about holding the Scholar in Residence position for SEAHO this year?
I am looking forward to meeting student affairs professionals from across the region and gaining information
that I can use to enhance the experiences of our students at the Luckyday Residential College.
