SEAHO Report - Fall 2019 - 31

SEAHO Feature Articles
with our unique "word" to represent what is most important to us.
Every cluster had their own special theme, and this was ours. We
truly connected, and we have done a great job at staying in touch
and cheering each other on. I am thrilled to see where my little
group ends up - they are phenomenal people and have SO much
potential to drive this field forward in a myriad of ways.
In one of our many faculty meetings (one not interrupted by the
Scripps National Spelling Bee), we all shared why we wanted to
be faculty members. Without fail, each of us spoke of wanting to give back to others the way that someone had
once given to us. This is a profession of relationships. RELI is a bastion of that very idea - that relationships
are at the core of what we do and should be created, nurtured, protected, and valued as such. The institute offers
a wealth of content and knowledge and research and readings, but it is rooted in that connection. That personal
touch. That contact that led us all to this weird profession and keeps us coming back for more year after year.
So, thank you for the connection. To Shannon Jordan and Stephanie Carter, our co-chairs for keeping us in line
(as much as possible); to the staff at the University of South Carolina, led by Josh Wise, for schooling us in
what true hospitality means; and to Mindy Bliss, Scott Rausch, Brian Johnson, Richard Swearingen, Priscilla
Williams, Demarcus Merritt, and Shylan Scott for being a
phenomenal team that still brings me a smile each morning via
that GroupMe ping.
RELI truly was a career-defining experience for this humble
faculty member. It can be for you, too. Faculty applications are
due November 18th. Participant applications open in the spring.
Take the chance - drink the Kool-Aid - I promise you won't
regret it.

"On The Other Side": From Candidate to Recruiter; Stories on SelfExpression from The Placement Exchange
Paige Leigh Thomas and Natasha Young, University of North Carolina Greensboro
Introduction
Walking through the maze of black curtains and university spirit with a blue employer name badge was not what
we imagined we would be doing during the spring of our first year as new professionals. These experiences
are typically reserved for those more seasoned in the profession. The anxiety and stress we experienced at The
Placement Exchange less than a year earlier as candidates eagerly trying to find the "perfect fit" for our first
professional job out of graduate school came washing over us once more as we entered the L.A. Convention
Center. Proudly carrying UNCG banners and boxes filled with candidate files, we were extremely excited while
simultaneously nervous about the next four days. Why you might ask? Hours of talking about ourselves, asking
the same questions over and over again, cheeks hurting from smiling... How could we possibly get through this
monumentally important week after only being on the other side of the table a mere year ago?
