challenging, the subsequent growth
will be beneficial both personally
and professionally.
5. It is okay to mourn. In such a
short amount of time, I lost an
influential person in my life due
to the coronavirus. Additionally,
I lost one of the three buildings I
oversee for the next academic year
for reasons outside of my control.
I had already created a team and
hired those students. We had to
reassign them to positions in other
halls. I was only able to keep one
of those students on my team. It
is hard, and I feel like I have lost
a lot in only a couple months. It is
okay to mourn. It is okay to not be
okay and to take care of yourself
appropriately.
We, as a field, must be ready to
continue to navigate the unknown
with our residents. We need to keep
them as our focal point all while
continuing to take care of ourselves.
The resilience and flexibility each
of us has will be beneficial to our
students and institutions as we
continue to navigate through this
pandemic. We got this!
6. Do what you believe is best.
There is not always a lot of
guidance over what to do in certain
situations - whether we are
working through a pandemic or not.
It is important to trust yourself and
the training you have received to do
what is best in any given situation.
You have the training, experience,
and support staff available to you to
be successful.
While this list is not exhaustive,
this is just a little glimpse into
what I have learned from the
initial impacts of COVID-19 on the
university housing front. As we
look to our future, with several
institutions of higher education
doing what they think is best
for their students and staff, a lot
is changing, to which we need
to adapt. Some institutions are
closing. Other institutions are not
opening on time or at all in the fall.
Other institutions are opening as
planned.
