SEAHO Report - Fall 2020 - 4

SEAHO EDITOR

Dear SEAHO,
Between the unknowns, the knowns, and constant pivoting of
processes during COVID, I have found myself with more questions
than answers and more stumbles than mountain climbs. Yet, here
in North Carolina, the leaves have begun to change, reminding me
that despite 2020's efforts, Autumn has somehow still managed
to arrive with beauty in the midst of what often feels like chaos
on campus.
With the change in weather comes a slight change in our campus
population as well. Students wonder what the virus will look in
the spring, staff anxiously count down the remaining days of the
semester, and overall there is a looming desire that some relief await in the spring semester as we hold onto
the hope that we will be able to wish students a "Happy Thanksgiving" at the break and a "Welcome Back"
in January.
If you're like me, you probably find your mind running a million miles a minute these days, but the one
thing I found myself consistently revisiting is a Brene Brown quote that speaks about how we are all
imperfect, we are wired for struggle, and there will be low moments in life- (insert all of COVID-19)- BUTso is everyone else. We are not alone in that struggle.
And when we sit in that, when we truly let ourselves feel the weight of a life filled with imperfections and
messy, painful stumbles, we grow and we begin to allow ourselves to accept community, support, and
love with all of our flaws and painful moments, not in spite of them. We find beauty in what is, instead of
"what it could have been had xyz occurred." I'm still learning that and growing in that, especially in 2020.
I anticipate some of you are too- so I hope this is a reminder to you, if you're feeling like 2020 hit you like a
bus, it's okay. Lean into it, and when you're ready, get back up. But know, you absolutely do not have to get
back up alone.
So person reading this, go get you some coffee or a beverage of choice, settle into a comfy seat or a chair
beneath the changing leaves, and take a moment to breathe in the crisp the Autumn air, or breathe in the
humidity- let's be honest, we are in the South. In the pages that follow we hope you will find some timely
SEAHO news and wisdom in the nine fantastic feature articles of this issue. We hope you will find, if only for
a moment, rest.
Thank you once again to our Feature Articles Editor, Michael Dobrin, Residence Coordinator at Lousiana
State University, for his hard work getting these articles ready for publication. As you complete this edition
of the SEAHO Report, we welcome you to visit seaho.org to submit for our next installment. The submission
deadline for the Conference edition of the Report is October 23rd!
Sending best wishes for you and your campus,
