to you having survived before you, having grown from a seed or sapling or pup to its current state, therefore
proving it has the ability to thrive.
In both situations, the plant comes to you in a transitory phase, in a temporary pot or container, having been
moved from one set of conditions into a new, unknown environment with little to no opportunity to undo
whatever happens to them in that space. The plant is vulnerable and you have decided to take stewardship over
its ability to thrive. Regardless of your motivation for doing so -- a commitment to new ideals, a need to bring
new life into your environment, a desire to transform a space -- you are committed once you start. The plant
will either survive with you, in spite of you, or not at all.
The distinction between the two options is that one is intentional, more prepared to make changes, and
centering the plant and its needs; and in the other, it is place-centered, specifically seeking to assimilate the
plant into its space with an understanding that it may or may not work.
But we all don't pick our plants ourselves, right? Sometimes we are gifted, or we inherit plants from other
sources, with little consideration to our desires. From our acquisition of that plant, we have to decide: do we care
for this plant fully or not? In that decision, you decide the life cycle of that plant, before you've even watered it.
You will need to decide if this plant will become a part of this ecosystem, and the willingness to provide the same
consideration and care you would provide to a chosen plant must be included in that decision.
Consider the following:
* The type of plant (tropical, evergreen, perennial, etc)
* The type of flowers/leaves or other physical features
* Root structure
* Stand-alone plant vs. propagated pup or cutting of larger plant
* Anticipated or expected growth cycle
* Measures of decay and signals of poor health
* Presence of existing issues (previous bug infestation, previously under/over-watered)
* Issues beyond our control (time spent in transit, condition it was grown in previously, age/maturation
of plant, life cycle of plant)
* Life cycle/stage of the plant (whether it is sprouting, blooming, flourishing, etc)
Presented another way, consider the following:
