When you consider all the frames of Bolman and Deal's model, our committee work can suddenly
look more complex than when you started reading this article series. Fear not! There are five
questions that Bolman and Deal offer for you to narrow down which frame(s) you should first
consider in identifying ways to get the committee moving forward in a productive way based on
challenges you anticipate or are already experiencing (2008, p. 317).
1. Are individual commitment and motivation essential to success?
If yes, consider the HR and/or Symbolic Frames. If no, look to the Structural and/or
Political Frames to guide you.
2. Is the technical quality of the decision important?
If yes, use the Structural Frame. If no, look to the remaining three frames.
3. Are there high levels of ambiguity and uncertainty?
If yes, apply the Political and/or Symbolic Frames. If no, consider the Structural and/or HR
frames.
4. Are conflict and scarce resources significant?
If yes, look to the Political and/or Symbolic Frames. If no, check the Structural and/or HR
Frames.
5. Are you working from the bottom up?
If yes, consider the Political Frame. If no, the remaining three frames should be used.
While our article series inspected the Four Frames individually, you can begin to reframe your
own approach, consciously or intuitively, until you understand the situation at hand and develop a
diagnosis of what is really going on in order to guide your team (Bolman & Deal, 2015). Housing
tends to appoint committee chairs in their positions and disperse committee members appropriately,
without having clarity on what this means (Symbolic); how committees operate (Structural); what are
the opportunities/restraints (Political); and how do members, chairs, and non-committee members
interact (human resource). Our hope is that this article series provides an introductory, foundational
framework on how you and your departments can approach unpacking an understanding of
committees at your home institutions. We encourage you to provide and/or seek out further training
and development that revolve around the topics brought forward. Reading articles and books by
