FEATURE ARTICLES
In Residence Life, as an " entry level " professional, our
responsibilities are approximately divided as follows:
I've broken this down to show that supervision is a large part
of our every day work. Additionally, it's the part of my job
where I feel I have the most impact. As I became an area
coordinator and a mother simultaneously, the attention I
would have devoted to my staff after hours and on weekends
now had competition with my son.
As I was attempting to navigate supervising multiple
staffs and communities, I found it difficult to cultivate the
relationships I used to before because the bulk of my
relationship building was occurring in all of the extra time I
devoted to staff development that I no longer have the time
or energy to commit to. This was incredibly hard to swallow as I was noticing that after an entire
semester, I had very surface level relationships with my staff. Since then I realized that I would need
to find comfort with vulnerability in order to be transparent with my staff on who they are being
supervised by. Therefore, I shared the following concepts with my staff:
* I became a student affairs professional to positively impact and empower the lives of college
students. However, the foundation of who I am as a human is at the intersection of my identity as a
mother, Black woman, AND a student affairs professional. My priorities will always be my child first
but that does not change the level of my passion for this work.
* I have boundaries. My boundaries are put in place so that I can do more than just maintain my
sanity and self-care. They are there to also set an example of the consistent need to prioritize one's
mind, body, and soul holistically.
* I am more than just your supervisor. There are times where I am your supervisor, but when I get
home from work, I am a mother, partner, food provider, master
tickler, bath sea monster, and much more!
Letting my staff look through the window into my life has helped
them conceptualize the entirety of the roles I play beyond area
coordinator.
